CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background

Education has an important role in implementing one's skills to enter a work place. The

knowledge gained in tertiary institutions is limited to theory and practice on a small scale, so

that students are ready to face the increasingly hard work world, they need to do work training

directly at the agency or institution. After being free from academic ties at the related tertiary

institution, students can apply the knowledge and experience gained during their education at

the tertiary institution and the period of job training to apply in the world of work. One way to

realize the program is to carry out an internship.

Internship is the process of understanding work with direct work practices in

companies with the aim of gaining useful knowledge, skill, and work experience. It is one of

the main requirements for going through the education process. At first, final year students are

required to do an internship at a company before getting a degree. The demands of the

workforce that are increasingly high result in the internship process to become very important

for the future.

The internship program is in accordance with the D3 curriculum program, Universitas

Negeri Makassar, that in the last semester, students majoring in Business English are required

to undertake an internship. During the internship program, the intern did many activities. The

results of the internship should be written as the final assignment.

With this internship program, it can be a good learning for students. Apprentices must

be responsive to all the possibilities that might occur in the process, how to communicate and

cooperate with the people who are our supervisors, how to overcome any problems that arise
1
and how we carry ourselves so that we can maintain the good name of our own institution and

the corporate institution.

Seeing the importance of this program for the students after graduation, then if it’s not

implemented, it can cause confusion to the students about what they should do when entering

the real work field. As we know, experience is the best teacher. That’s why the experience that

we got from the internship program can be a lesson for the future when facing the real work

field and become a professional.

On this occasion, the apprentices did an internship in the office building owned by the

Hadji Kalla Family, Wisma Kalla, namely PT. Bumi Sarana Utama. The activities, tasks, and

functions in the office are the intern’s interests. Besides, the internship place is the place where

we apply knowledge and skills more deeply and intensively.

B. The Objectives of the Internship

The internship program has the following objectives:

1. For the University

a. To Fostering good relations between the campus and the company that provide

internship opportunities.

b. To developing the student’s professionalism and attitude that are mostly required in

the business world.

c. To applying knowledge or abilities gained from the campus.

2
2. For the relevant institution

To improving the ability to communicate and socialize with the community in the

company.

C. The Significances of the Internship

Benefits for Universities

1. The establishment of "bilateral" cooperation between the University and companies or

industries.

2. The university will be able to improve the quality of its graduates through internship

work experience.

3. The university will be known in the industrial world.

Benefits for the company or industry

1. There is a collaboration between the world of education and the world of industry or

company so that the company is known by academics.

2. The company or industry will get job support from students who practice.

Benefits for students

1. Theoretically, the internship can improve student’s knowledge and skills in management,

computer, and communication skills courses.

2. Practically, the internship program has given the opportunity to students to socialize

themselves into the actual work environment and know the activities of the company

both in terms of administration and communication skill.
