SECTION 1
Cargo and Port Operations

Section 1 - Cargo & Port Operations

You are Chief Officer on MT Strathclyde, a 15175 DWT, “Double Hull, ” oil tanker.
The particulars are as shown in the accompanying stability data booklet unless
stated otherwise. The vessel is currently on a voyage charter to a major oil
company.

SEGREGATED
BALLAST TANKS

M T Strathclyde. a double hulled tanker with 5 (five) single cargo tanks and 5 sets of
“L” shaped segregated ballast tanks as shown above.

Use volume of cargoes and VCG’s for each tank as given in the question paper.

The ship is to load a cargo of Diesel Oil (RD 0.820).

With regard to the loading operation:

(a) Discuss the stability considerations ( 6)

(b) Outline the Inert gas operations ( 4)

(c) Outline the precautions to be taken before loading to ensure


safety and pollution prevention (10)

(d) State the initial loading procedures and precautions that


should be adopted to ensure safety and pollution prevention (15)

(e) Outline the procedures for completion of cargo and topping off ( 5)

1. With reference to Cargo Datasheet 1 and 2 and hydrostatic particulars of


M.T. Strathclyde

certificates required to be carried on board a 15,000 DWT oil tanker under the

2. In relation to the vessel and cargo details supplied, explain the significance of the
following:
