ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
We, students of PGDM Marketing-1st Semester would like to pay our
sincere gratitude towards our Prof. Masuma Cyclewala for arranging our visit
to Bombay High Court for the purpose of understanding the Judicial System.
PURPOSE OF VISIT
We had a chance to visit the Bombay High Court on 26th November
2019.The basic purpose of visiting Bombay high court is to understand the nature
of duties of the judicial officers. This visit help us to understand the functioning
of court, simultaneously it help us to understand the nuance of our judicial
system. With the help of this visit we understand how courts dispense justice in
the case, the role of prosecutors in a case, the way cases proceed in a court, the
way defences lawyer handle the case.

We were amused to see dozens of advocates moving to and fro, while some
who were seated were waiting for their turn. There were many ordinary people
like us talking among themselves and with lawyers.
STRUCTURE OF COURTROOM
The courtroom consists of big hall which includes pavilion as well as a
podium for Honourable Judge with his reader and steno sitting on the left side of
the podium. On a pavilion comparatively lower to that of judge there is a witness
and an accused box. In between the two boxes, there was typist who type all the
statement made by the witness.
The prosecutor and the defense counsel stands near the bench. Between the
two counsels stands, the witness and the accused stands beside the accused box.
There was setting arrangement available for the public attending the hall. There
were cupboards available to keep all the files related to trials. Even the case
properties and the other registered maintain in the court by the different judicial
officers.

The interiors of the museum are designed exactly like a court room. We
were amazed at how well the space has been curated- with old legal rolls, portraits
of the advocates and a minuscule model of the Bombay High Court in a corner.
We found Barrister M.K Gandhi’s certificate from the year 1891, and his
application to study law dating back to 1890s. Vallabhbhai Patel’s certificates and
degree were displayed alongside too.
The High Court Canteen that sells super cheap food and drinks (owing to
its presence on the premise). It is usually crowded with lawyers and people who
are awaiting their legal proceedings.
UNDERSTANDING
The visit helped us in understanding the role of court in dispensing justice
in any case, the role of prosecutors in a case, the way cases proceed in a court,
the way judges, prosecutors and defense lawyers handle the case, the relationship
of the prosecutors and the police.
This gave an opportunity to understand the actual need of co- ordination in
the justice system. The visit included an in-depth study of the day to day
functioning of the Civil and Criminal Courts, at different levels and over a vast
variety of cases.
