OBJECTIVES
To engage in architectural design in the context of the city.
The studio will focus on architecture as being shaped by and shaping the urban context. The
process of architectural design would be seen along with the aspects such as nature of cities,
urban morphology, history, place, density, society, public realm, economy, climate and
microclimate,ecology, legislation, finance. The design projects would become the site for taking
positions on specific issues and developing these ideas to completion.

Brief:
As part of the preliminary study done so far in various parts of Chennai,
the analysis and understanding of the issues are being exposed to the
students. From the preliminary study, further understanding into the
Architectural Design Program is to be dealt with.

From Kevin Lynch, the five factors that facilitate anyone to understand
a city in its context, are Access, Edge, District, Landmarks and Image of
the place.
Students from their preliminary study, can move ahead to understand
further into these aspects in the following locations, to arrive at an
understanding of the issues and the need for an architectural
intervention for a better urban civic life.

The areas of study are as follows:

1. North Madras
2. Central Station
3. Koyambedu
4. Tambaram

The areas are chosen, in the spine of Chennai Metro rail route, with its
current / proposed stations in place.
Further to the preliminary study, a mixed use potential of the place has
to be evolved, in terms of Architectural program – for further design
and showcasing the urban study understanding of the place.

Potential projects in the above areas can be – shopping, offices, transit

hub etc and any other response to the locality is also welcome.
