GRADE 10 Syllabus (Mr.

Daniel)

QUARTER 1

Unit 1: Acting Technique (Twice a week)

Students will revise and sharpen all techniques and skills previously learnt in order to be more
confident and skilled for their performance tasks.

They will work on:


-Vocal technique (Safe voice use + Creative voice use)
-Body (Functional body training + Creative and expressive body use)
-Acting technique (Neutrality, ensemble building, Uta Hagen Exercises, various tips and tricks, 7
states of tension)

Unit 2: Directors Workshop (Twice a week)

Students will reacquaint themselves with concepts and terminologies previously learnt through an
analysis of a chosen script.

This unit will cover the following:


-An understanding of theatrical and dramatic terms
-Interpretation and direction
-Skills as a designer (lighting, sound, sets and costumes)
-Text analysis (Intention, motivation, tension, atmosphere, Scene structure, thought and idea
beating, Character building, etc.)
-Writing about the dramatic process

Quarter 1 Assessments

Assignment 1: A pop quiz on dramatic terminology


Assignment 2: A script analysis assignment
Assignment 3: Essay on any one part of the directing and character building process of creating their
duologue.
Assignment 4: Duologue Performance. Students will be graded on acting skills as well as stylistic
choices.

QUARTER 2

Unit 3: Text into Performance (3 class a week)

Students prepare their selected piece of text for their group performance part of their Component 2.

Students will:
-Assign character roles as well as creative roles
-Ideate and design their selected scene.
-Rehearse the scene
-Prepare all sets and costumes

(Performance will be held in the second week of Quarter 3)

Unit 4: Devising Techniques (1 classes a week)

Students will be introduced to techniques and exercises that help them build a sense of ensemble
and develop the skills required to create an original piece of theatre.

Exercises:

Ensemble building
Nature imitation/ Animal work
Improv
Physical theatre
Creative writing

Quarter 2 Assessments:

Summative: End of semester exams

Formative:
1. Character exploration process
2. A design assignment
3. Writing about process
4. Reflection.

QUARTER 3

Unit 5: Devising into Performance (3 classes a week)

Students will work towards preparing their Group Devised Performance as per their official
component requirement.

Students will:

-Finalise their groups and pick their stimulus


-Ideate and create
-Design and build
-Games and exercises will be conducted to help the students keep their ideas fresh.

Unit 6: Solo/Individual Skills (1 Class a week)

Students will begin the groundwork for their final performance submission
Students will:

Confirm their selection of Monologue


Ideate and design their final performance
Review relevant Performance techniques

Quarter 3 Assessments:
1. Designing theatre games that help with devising.
2. Evidence of creative, out of the box thinking.
3. Design and Direction process.
4. Group devised performance

Students will also be required to read the pre- released script for their final exam.

QUARTER 4

Unit 7: Solo Performance (2 classes a week)

As a summation of their 2 years of the IGCSC programme, students should be ready to prepare their
solo performance with confidence and creativity and with minimal help from their teacher.

The students will:

-Direct and design their final performance


-Consult with peers
-Make all props and costumes
-Finalise all design elements including sound and light

Unit 8: Exam preparation (2 classes a week)

Students use their experience of the last 2 years to cultivate a strong critical thinking ability.

-Students will revisit all concepts from Unit 1 and 2


-Students will be required to work on and perform their group performance based on stimulus
-Students will be required to work on and perform their group performance based on the pre-
released script.

Quarter 4 Assessments:

1. Group devised performance


2. Group script based performance
3. A report on the process of creating their solo piece
4. Script Analysis assignment.
