A word processor

is software or a device that allows users to create, edit, and print documents. It enables you to
write text, store it electronically, display it on a screen, modify it by entering commands and
characters from the keyboard, and print it.

Of all computer applications, word processing is the most common. Today, most word
processors are delivered either as a cloud service or as software that users can install on a PC or
other device.

Advantages of word processors

1) It is faster and easier than writing by hand.

2) You can store documents on your computer, which you cannot do on a typewriter.

3) You can review and rewrite your documents.

4) There are more formatting choices with a word processor (the spelling, grammar and language
tools).

5) You can print copies of your documents.

formatting

Making a digital storage media ready (usually by the user or reseller) to receive and store data in
a logical manner. Upon their manufacture, diskettes and hard disks are like blank sheets of paper
which need to be divided (formatted) into logically numbered or named equal-size sections
(called sectors) so that data can be entered and found quickly. Every operating system (OS) has
its unique (non-standard) procedure for formatting magnetic media which normally cannot be
used by other OS. Optical media (CD and DVD), however, can be used by any OS because it is
formatted (always by the manufacturer) according to the universally-followed ISO standards.

A font

is a set of printable or displayable text character s in a specific style and size. The type design for
a set of fonts is the typeface and variations of this design form the typeface family . Thus,
Helvetica is a typeface family, Helvetica italic is a typeface, and Helvetica italic 10-point is a
font. In practice, font and typeface are often used without much precision, sometimes
interchangably. A font is a graphical representation of text that may include a different typeface,
point size, weight, color, or design. The image shows some examples of different computer
fonts. Software programs like Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and WordPad allow users to
change the font used when typing text in the document or spreadsheet, as do web designers.

Cut

The "Cut" function removes the currently selected text and places it on the clipboard. The
clipboard on a computer functions as temporary storage for the last item you've cut or copied.
After you cut text, you won't see it on your screen, but you can place it anywhere in the
document using the "Paste" function. You can perform a cut on selected text by pressing
"Control-X" or clicking the "Cut" button on the Home tab in Microsoft Word.

Copy

When you press "Control-C" or click the "Copy" button on the Home tab, the computer copies
the selected text into the clipboard. The text also remains in its original location. By pasting
copied text, you duplicate it, making it faster to reuse the same word or sentence over and over.
Paste

The "Paste" button on the Home tab places the current contents of the clipboard into the
document at the flashing cursor's location. You can also paste by pressing "Control-V." When
you paste text, the computer does not remove it from the clipboard, so you can paste it multiple
times or in several places without needing to copy it again. Turning off your computer or
rebooting empties the clipboard.
