History Of Colgate Palmolive

In 1806, William Colgate, opened up a starch, soap, and candle factory on Dutch Street in New York City
under the name of "William Colgate & Company". In 1857, William Colgate died and the company was
reorganized as "Colgate & Company" under the management of Samuel Colgate, his son. In 1873, the firm
introduced its first toothpaste; company sold the first toothpaste in a tube, Colgate Ribbon Dental Cream.
Colgate has numerous subsidiary organizations spanning 200 countries.

The Pakistani Toothpaste industry is a form of Differentiated Oligopoly comprising of five major companies
Unilever, Colgate Palmolive, Smith Kline, Mariana Company and English Lab. The production in the
toothpaste market is also not growing at an “increasing rate”. The market has only grown 33% from where it
stood in 2003 to the year 2007, compared to the tooth powder market which increased 32.5% in the same
period.
