1 Scope
Vehicle parts or function groups that are purchased ready to be installed from vendors, are partially
supplied by vendors, are taken from current production as spare or accessory parts, or are
manufactured in-house as spare or accessory parts must be identified by a permanent and easily
legible three-character manufacturer's code (alphabetic or alphanumeric) indicating the
manufacturer.
Identification by the manufacturer's code is required so that selective damage and quality analysis
can be carried out if necessary and so that the manufacturer can always be identified in warranty
and product liability cases.
Manufacturer's codes have been established for all manufacturers and their individual production
locations that supply vehicle parts to the Volkswagen Group and its brands, including its associated
companies.
The manufacturer's codes for Volkswagen AG and Audi AG are assigned on request.
Suppliers can access information on contacts and procedures via the B2B supplier platform at
www.vwgroupsupply.com.
The manufacturer is notified of the assignment of the manufacturer code in writing.
Manufacturer's codes for foreign affiliated companies are issued separately according to the issuing
specifications defined in VW 105 40-3. The contacts for assigning manufacturer's codes in the
Group companies abroad are likewise available via the B2B supplier platform at
www.vwgroupsupply.com.

The identification requirement for vehicle parts may be dropped in the following cases:
─ standard parts
─ semifinished parts,
─ parts for which identification is not possible because of space limitations and/or cannot be
applied so that it is readable (see DIN 1450 for this term).
For parts which, due to their nature, cannot be identified with the manufacturer's code as per this
standard, alternative forms of identification shall be agreed between the manufacturer and the
center awarding the manufacturer's code, as shall the inclusion of same in the appropriate
documents.
Exception: For valve springs, color markings acc. to VW 105 40-7 are assigned to the manufacturer
as an alternative manufacturer's code.

2 Requirements
Part identification shall be established immediately for newly developed items and first-order items.
Missing identifications shall be applied immediately. Identification specification according to Figure
2 shall be ensured. Any codes that do not apply shall be deleted.
The code characters shall be half the size of the trademark diameter “d1” or the trademark height
“h” acc. to VW 105 14 if possible, but even when space is limited the size shall never be less than
2 mm.
Assemblies (ASSY) that are sold as spare parts shall only be identified once by such a code,
whereas any component part of an assembly that is listed individually as a spare part shall also be
identified by a code.
The identification on the part should if possible be located so that it is visible in as-installed position.
When identifying parts that are in the visual range of the customer, agreement shall be reached
with Design and the center assigning the manufacturer's code on the application position of the
identification.
Typeface according to DIN 1451, part 4 (medium-spaced lettering) applies to the identification.
VW 105 00 contains further identification requirements.
