ESP Coding Info

Updated 20 Feb. 2006

Ross-Tech is not responsible for any damage or problems that may result from following these instructions.
They are to be used at your own risk. As always, you should refer to a Factory Repair Manual for your
vehicle!

This procedure details how to Recode the ABS/ESP controller in many VW/Audi vehicles (specifcally the B5
Passat and the B5 Audi A4/S4) equipped with Bosch 5.3 ESP (Electronic Stability Program). This procedure
should be performed if any of the following components have been removed or replaced:

 ABS/EDL/ASR/ESP control unit (J104)

 Steering Angle Sensor (G85)

First of all, make sure you have downloaded and installed the latest version of VAG-COM (Release 512.1 at
the time this page was created):

Coding the ESP controller requires both a specific Login value and a specific Recode value, depending on
which engine, brakes, and transmission are in the vehicle. Locate your vehicle below:

Engine Transmission Brake Calipers Login Recode

4 cyl gasoline Manual Lucas C54 09675 04175
4 cyl gasoline Manual FN3 Teves/ATE 09575 04275
4 cyl gasoline Automatic Lucas C54 09677 04177

4 cyl diesel Automatic Lucas C54 09677 04177

(For example, an Audi S4 2.7T with a manual transmission would require a Login of 09495 and a Recode of
04395).

With the ignition on, but the engine not running:

[Select]
[03 - ABS Brakes]
[Login - 11]
Enter the appropriate Login value from the table.
[Do It!]
Make sure you don't get a Dropped Session message and that the cursor on the top left keeps spinning.
[Recode - 07]
Enter the appropriate Recode value from the table. Put in a WSC (anything will work, try 12345). It can NOT
be left as all zeros.
[Do It!]
Again, make sure the cursor is still spinning. Do NOT exit out of the controller yet.

If the above is not successful, try it with the engine running.

Next, do the steering angle sensor calibration:

[Login - 11]
Enter 40168
[Do It!]
[Basic Settings - 04]
Group 001
[Go!]

This will store the zero (centered) position of the steering wheel. There should be a displayed message that
reads: "Steer. angle sender compens OK". If you get an error, it may mean the Login was not successfully
performed.

Click the [Done, Go Back] button and you're all set.
