COURSE TITLE: ADVANCED SHORTHAND
SEMESTER : Second Semester, SY 2019-2020
CREDIT : Three (3) Units
TIME DURATION: Three (3) Hours/week (54 Hours, 18 weeks)
PRE-REQUISITE: OA 111

I. COURSE DESCRIPTION:
It focuses on the basic principle and application on combination of shorthand strokes of English alphabets. One (1) hour lecture and two
(2) hours drills per week.

II. UNIVERSITY VISION AND MISSION

IV. PROGRAM GOALS (Program Goals are the expected outcomes for the BS Office Administration graduates within two to five years)

1. Quality for a career in office administration specifically in various general and specialized administrative support, supervisory, and
managerial positions.

2. Acquire the competencies, skills, knowledge, and work values necessary for self-employment.

COURSE OUTCOMES: At the end of the semester, the students should:


Knowledge:
1. Understand the concept of Advanced Shorthand
2. Know the various letter strokes in transcribing shorthand
3. Differentiate word endings and word beginnings
4. Learn different sounds and its respective strokes
5. Differentiate brief forms, brief form derivatives and brief form phrases

Skills:
1. Acquire skills in encoding, taking down dictation, and transcribing legal papers or documents/materials containing medical terms in
proper format
2. Transcribe and encode office documents under the stress of dictation
3. Construct a legible shorthand outline for words in English language
4. Develop students’ ability to construct shorthand outlines of words, brief forms, phrases through stress dictations
5. Take dictation at the rate of 50 words per minute.
6. Transcribe a three-minute dictation with 10% error.

Attitudes & Values:


1. Recognize the role of shorthand writing in the success of legal entities
2. Develop positive attitude in transcribing shorthand strokes
3. Develop speed and accuracy in taking shorthand dictations
4. Acquire mastery of shorthand theories of words and vocabularies that are used in different documents.
5. Possess adequate skills in spelling, punctuation, grammar, and vocabulary usage.

XI. COURSE POLICIES


A. Course Policy:
1. New and regular students should follow the sequence of subjects in the syllabus
2. Transferees and shifters will be dependent on the evaluation of the program chairman

B. Classroom Policies
In addition to the policies governing students stipulated on the students manual, the following policies be followed:
1. Students are encouraged to have regular attendance.
2. Students while inside the classrooms should observe wearing proper and complete uniform otherwise will be considered absent. He/she
will however, be allowed to stay inside the classroom.
3. Students can use any piece and size of clean paper during quizzes or assignments unless specific instructions were given by the
instructor.
4. Chewing of moma will not be tolerated during class hours.
5. Sharing of inputs/ideas and asking of relevant questions is equivalent to extra points to be added on the total classroom standing.
6. Submission of requirements/researches/portfolio/reports beyond the specified deadline will result to a zero score.
7. Mobile phones and other gadgets must be turned off or on its silent mode during class hours.
8. No unnecessary use of personal computers and other gadgets while class is on-going except for notes taking and search of documents
to support on-going class discussion.
9. Making of researches, assignments and other activities that distract the class are strictly prohibited.
