SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 10 03/13/2017

Educational Institute : Agusan National High School

Student Teacher : Mary Gracelyn C. Nagas
Cooperating Teacher : Jessica D. Cagulangan
Grade : 10
Section : Apollo (7:00 – 8:00 PM)

I. OBJECTIVES: At the end of the period 85% of the learners will be able to:
A. Identify independent and dependent events
B. Find the probability of independent and dependent events
C. Show teamwork and cooperation through active participation in the discussion and group activity.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Topic : Probability of Compound Events
(Independent and Dependent Events)
B. Reference: Mathematics Grade 10, Learner’s Module
C. Materials: Visual Aid, peanut bars, polvoron, paper bag, activity sheet

III. LEARNING PROCEDURE

A. Preparatory Activities
1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Classroom Management
4. Checking of Attendance
5. Review

B. Lesson Proper

1. Activity
The teacher will group students into four. The name of the activity is “Unpuzzle me”. Give them
a puzzle to form and whoever group finishes first, is the winner and will get 5 points. The students are
encouraged to participate within the group and should not make any loud noise. The activity is good only
for five minutes.

Puzzle:

After the activity, the teacher asks the students the following;

1. What did you feel while you did the activity?

Educ12. Student Teaching (Lesson Plan) page 1

2. Did you find the activity difficult? Or not?

3. What words have you formed in the puzzle?

The teacher then tells the students that words in the puzzle is the topic of the day. The goals of the lesson
are then communicated to students.

2. Analysis
The teacher will show to the students the definition and formula of the following;

Independent events
- are those events that has no effect or connection on the probability of another event
occurring.
Keywords often used in the problem:
Replaced, putting back, returned back

Example of an Independent Event:

1. Winning a contest and running out of cellphone load
2. Buying a cellphone and buying a raincoat

If two events, A and B, are independent, then the probability of both events occurring is the product
of the probability of A and the probability of B. In symbols,

P (A and B) = P (A). P (B)

Dependent events
- are events whose outcome is affected by previous events and will change the
outcomes of future events.
Keywords often used in the problem:
Without replacing, not putting or returning back

Example of a Dependent Event:

1. Being absent in the class and missed a quiz
2. Passing Grade 10 subjects and moving on to Grade 11

If two events are dependent, then the probability of both events occurring is the product of the
probability of A and the probability of B after A occurs. In symbols,

3. Abstract
An activity will be done to demonstrate further to students the concept of probability of independent
and dependent events. The teacher grouped the students into four (4). Each group is given a bag containing
ten (10) barnuts, five (5) polvorons and an activity sheet.

The teacher tells the students that they are going to learn the concept of probability of independent
and dependent events through the activity, and will solve problems relating to them.

Activity A. Independent Events

The activity is good only for seven (7) minutes. For every correct answer, they will get two (2)
points. Another two (2) points is given to those who finish it ahead of time.

a. How many items are in the bag?

b. How many are barnuts? Polvorons?
c. Pick one barnut from the bag and find its probability, return the barnut into the bag.
d. Pick one polvoron from the bag and find its probability, return the polvoron into the bag.
e. Does the process of getting the probability of two events (item c and d) an independent or
dependent? Why?
g. Find the probability of getting a barnut and polvoron using the formula
P (barnut and polvoron) = P (barnut) x P (polvoron)

After the activity, the teacher asks the students their answers to the questions.

Solution/Answers:
a. 15 items
b. 10 barnut and 5 polvorons
c. P (barnut) = 10/15
d. P (polvorons) = 5/15
e. It is an independent event because it does not affect the probability of getting a polovoron on the
second draw, since the barnut on the first draw is put back inside the bag.
f. Since both events are independent, it is solved using the independent formula.

P (barnut and polvoron) = P (barnut) x P (polvoron)

P (barnut and polvoron) = 10/15 x 5/15
P (barnut and polvoron) = 50/225 or 2/9

Activity B. Dependent Events

With the same group and materials, the teacher let the students do and answer the following
questions cooperatively. The activity is only good for seven (7) minutes. For every correct answer they will
get two (2) points. Another two (2) points is given to those who finish it ahead of time.

a. How many items are in the bag?

b. How many are barnuts? Polvorons?
c. Pick one barnut from the bag, find its probability, and then do not return the item anymore.
d. Pick one polvoron for the second draw, and find its probability. Then do not return anymore
the polvoron into the bag.
e. How many items are left? Find the probability of barnut and polvoron using the formula of
dependent events.
f. Compare the result of getting the probability of barnut and polvoron using the independent
formula versus the result using the dependent formula, are they the same? What are their
differences?

After the activity, the teacher asks the students their answers to the questions.

Solutions/Answers
a. 15
b. 10 barnuts and 5 polvorons
c. P ( barnut) = 10/15
d. P ( polvoron) = 5/14
e. 13 items are left.
P (barnut and polvoron) = P (barnut) x P (polvoron following barnut)
P (barnut and polvoron) = 9/13 x 4/13
P (barnut and polvoron) = 36/169
f. No, the results are not the same. The sample space in the dependent events decreases, every time
the item picked is not returned anymore into the bag.

4. Application

I. On the same group, identify and group each event as either independent or dependent events.
The first to finish earns five (5) points. The group who identify it perfectly will get another five (5)
points, two points (2) for those who were not able to do it perfectly.

a. Spinner Wheel b. Raffle draw d. Drawing Scrabble tiles, each tile is distinct
e. Three cards are chosen at random from a deck of 52 cards without replacement. What is the
probability of choosing 3 aces?

Answer: a. independent b. dependent c. dependent d. dependent e. dependent
