CREATING YOUR PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT

The most effective way to begin with the end in mind

is to develop a personal mission statement.

Develop a mission statement, one that focuses on

what you want to be in terms of character and what
you want to do in reference to contribution of
achievements.
Stephen Covey
CREATING YOUR PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT
“To….(what you want to achieve, do or become)….so
that….(reasons why it is important). I will do this by….(outline
specific behaviours or actions you can use to get there).”

“I value….(highlight 3 values)….because….(outlines reasons why

those are important to you). Accordingly, I will….(what you can
do to live by these values).”

“To live each day with….(choose three values or principles)….so

that….(what living by these values will give you). I will do this
by….(identify specific behaviours you will use to live by these
values).”

PERSONAL CORE VALUES:
u Personal core values are beliefs or convictions that you
embrace as standards of behaviour that you are unwilling to
compromise.
u They will guide your attitude, decision-making and behavior.
u Some personal values: honesty, integrity, professionalism,
teamwork, service and good health

An example of a personal core value might be:

“I value excellence above expediency and therefore will
always do things to the best of my ability even when it is
difficult to do so.”
“Your beliefs become your thoughts.
Your thoughts become your words.
Your words become your actions.
Your actions become your habits.
Your habits become your values.
Your values become your destiny.”
Mahatma Ghandi
SET S.M.A.R.T. GOALS
u You build your future by developing concrete plans to
reflect your priorities
u These become your goals for the next year
u It is important that you develop focused goals
u Specific
u Measurable
u Achievable
u Realistic
u Time Stamped
SPECIFIC
u Goals need to be clearly stated so they are easily
understood and easy to remember
u Define whether the goal is short term or a long
term goal
u short term is immediate to one year
u long term will be two to three years

*Most, if not all, of your goals will be considered short term, as

your co-op term will begin next winter
MEASURABLE
u The only way to know whether you accomplished
your goals is if you have some way to measure it
u Use numbers, if possible, to evaluate your
progress
u i.e. I will send out 25 resumes within six months.
ACHIEVABLE
u Is your goal achievable in the allotted time?
u Impossible goals guarantees failure and low
morale
u What steps must you take in order to achieve
your goal?
REALISTIC
u Be realistic about how long it will take to reach
your goal and the steps required to get there
TIME STAMPED
u Without a defined deadline or time frame, it is too easy
to procrastinate
u Have a set time limit for each of your goals and
remember, keep it achievable and realistic
