I. INTRODUCTION

The technical study provides information on the business

service activity, raw materials to be used in providing the

product, and the product descriptions. Technical aspect

further discusses the business process and the types of

products or goods to be sold, and the equipment used inside

the facility and other aspects regarding the bringing of

the raw materials or supplies into products ready to sell.

II. LOCATION SITE

The proposed location of The COFarm will be located in

Tawang, La Trinidad, Benguet and will supply restaurants

and retailers in Baguio City as the Central Business

District.

III. BUILDING AND EQUIPMENT

The building will be the center for productions and

operations of the company. It will be divided into three

areas: the administrative area, the production, and the

packaging area.

In a 200 square meters’ area just near the vegetable

production/plantation, the 2-storey building of the entity

will be constructed which will house the administrative

offices and packaging area. An Architect has estimated its

cost.

PRODUCTION PROCESS

This section provides the production process of organic

vegetables.

1. Land Preparation

Land preparation is significant to ensure that the

vegetable field is ready for planting. A well-prepared

field controls weeds, recycles plant nutrients, and

provides a soft soil mass for transplanting and a suitable

soil surface for direct seeding.

Soil cultivation includes all mechanical measures to

loosen, turn or mix the soil, such as ploughing, tilling,

digging, hoeing, harrowing etc. The soil must be carefully

cultivated to improve the soil ‘s capacity to retain water,

its aeration, capacity of infiltration, warming up,

67
PTechnical Aspect
evaporation etc. Depending on the cropping system and the

soil type, appropriate soil cultivation patterns must be

developed by the firm.

The materials to be used in the land preparation includes

tractor working field, spade, rake and the like.

2. Seedbed Preparation

Before sowing or planting, secondary soil cultivation is

done to crush and smoothen the ploughed surface. Seedbed

preparation has the purpose to provide enough loose soil of

appropriate clod size. If weed pressure is high, seedbeds

can be prepared early thus, allowing crop seeds to

germinate before the crop is sown. Shallow soil cultivation

after some days is sufficient to eliminate the young weeds.

Where water logging is a problem, seedbeds can be

established as mounds or ridges.

68
PTechnical Aspect
3. Mixing Organic Fertilizer to the Soil

Upon seedbed preparation, mixing of organic fertilizers to

the soil is beneficial. So the COFarm will aim at

maintaining and increasing the fertility of the soil and

biological activity of the farm by applying organic

fertilizers. Sufficient quantities of organic material

should be returned to the soil to increase or at least

maintain its humus content on a long-term basis. The

company will then use biodegradable materials that should

undergo a process of composting, fermentation or other

treatment that will be applied as organic fertilizers in

the farm. Right measure and proper application of organic

fertilizers will be exercised.

Aside from organic fertilizers, some well processed raw

organic fertilizers like animal manure and other compost

will be used.
69
PTechnical Aspect
4. SOWING SEED/PLANTING

Before planting of crops, the seed will be planted to the

nursery/seedling area for the crops to grow before

transplanting.

Planting pits are hand-dug circular holes which collect

water and store it for use by the crop. Each pit is about

20 cm across and 20 cm deep. After planting, the holes are

left partly open so they collect water. Planting pits take

a lot of work to dig when the soil is dry. But they produce

good yields in areas where otherwise crops might die

because of a lack of water. Once made, the pits can be used

again, season after season. Leave the soil covered, and add

compost or fertilizer to the pits to increase their

fertility. The depth of the planting hole of vegetable is

dependent on the type of crops to be planted. Also, the

distance of planting vegetables will be dependent on the

type of crop to be planted. For example, for the cabbage

planting, the distance would be 1 foot apart to give space

70
PTechnical Aspect
for plants to grow. The tools for planting are trowel or

hand fork.

5. Pest, disease and weed management

Organic weed-control standards are strictly adhered to at

the COfarm. The main methods to be used is cultivating,

mowing, hand weeding, cover crops, crop flamer, crop

rotation. Organic farmers give priority to prevention of

the introduction and multiplication of weeds. The

management practices aim at keeping the weed population at

a level that does not result in economic loss of the crop

cultivation or harm its quality. The goal is not to

completely eradicate all weeds, as they also have a role to

play on the farm. For example, weeds provide cover that

reduces soil erosion. In addition, most of the biological

diversity in our crop fields comes from the presence of

weeds. They provide habitat for both beneficial biocontrol

insects and mycorrhiza fungi. Because weeds offer pollen

and nectar they allow biocontrol insects to maintain their

71
PTechnical Aspect
populations and, therefore, serve as a valuable instrument

in controlling pests. COfarm will use organic pesticides

(herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, molluscicides,

nematicides etc.). Also, we will use products prepared at

the farm from local plants, animals and microorganisms.

Only following products allowed for pest, disease and weed

management like insect mechanical traps, Chromatic traps,

Plant-based repellents, silicates, gelatin etc. will be

used by the business.

6. Harvesting

The company will ensure that harvesting of vegetables will

be done at the right stage of maturity to ensure the best

taste and quality. Since most of the crops are not planted

simultaneously, the harvest period will be done several

times or every day and only the part that is ready for

harvest will be harvested. The quality of vegetables does

not improve after harvest so it is important to gather

crops at proper maturity. At this point, vegetables are at

72
PTechnical Aspect
their peak for flavor and nutrition. Tools to be used are

knives, scissors, sickle, crates and etc. depending on what

type of vegetables to be harvested.

7. Packaging

All products in COfarm will be adequately identified

through the whole process, until final labeling. The entire

system of packaging will be taken into consideration.

Organic product packaging will have minimal adverse

environmental impacts.

Unnecessary packaging materials in our products will be

avoided. Recycling and biodegradable materials will be used

whenever possible. The organic product will also be

73
PTechnical Aspect
packaged in reusable, recycled, recyclable and

biodegradable packaging materials

whenever possible. The product names, which refer to the

region or the processing method, will only be used on

products with this origin or products produced according to

local tradition. The name and address of the company

legally responsible for the production or processing of the

product will be identifiable on the products this is to

avoid the use of in-conversion labels.

8. Delivery

Products are ensured to be delivered from the day of

harvest upon the demand of the restaurants, retailers and

other customers to avoid spoilage. A delivery truck will be

used to deliver the COFarm products in a most efficient

way. The transportation will be appropriate to the

certified organic product. Rough treatment will be avoided.

The mode of payment for the COFarm delivery services is on

cash basis only.
