Advantages: official language of many countries and international
organizations, most scientific publications are in this language, as
well as lots of books, it’s grammar is very simple, even though it has irregularities. Lots of internationally used roots and words in it’s vocabulary. Disadvantages: phonetically hard for many foreigners to learn, and the low gap between the sounds of some English phonemes facilitates misunderstandings depending on your accent. Also, it’s international use causes extra problems: in some countries English-native speakers have preference to get a job, also some girls prefer to marry an English-native man to raise English-native children, It’s easier for native speaker to impose their opinions in a international forum that uses English as its official language. This is not a problem of the language itself, but of the role we give to it. On the other hand, the use of English by lots of people with different cultural background is creating new English dialects and many words and expressions from other languages were incorporated to English recently.
1. English is now perceived by some as a language to establish
a sense of pride, superiority over Filipinos who can’t speak English fluently. This can often be agrandised through the usage of accents such as American or British ones. You often find snobbish Filipinos speaking English that may sound unnatural simply because they’re merely mimicking. Of course, some may have grew up or spent most of their time in a foreign country; that’s an exception if they can speak Filipino atleast or switch to a Filipino accent that we hear and love.
