FOREWORD
Only a few decades ago, roads in this country were largely built with the help
ofmanual labourand nomechanical equipment worth the name was used except the
road rollers and trucks, The picture now is entirely different. Rigorous standards
prescribed now for roads which have to carry heavy and fast moving traffic
necessitate introduction ofmechanised construction control on the quality of road
construction is far better if machines are used right from building up of the
embankmentto the laying and finishing ofthe roadsurface. Thus mechanisation not
only helps in quick execution but provides longer life and brings in substantial
economy in the maintenance cost.
Large scale use of road making machinery was firstresorted to in the year 1961
when several road projects were taken up for execution, to be completed within a
very tight time schedule and according to rigid specifications. As very little road
making machinery was being manufactured in the country at that time, most of it
had to be imported. Since then the Indian Roads Congress is pursuing the
manufacture of machinery in the country through its Highway Construction and
Mechanisation Committeewith the Ministry of Heavylndustries and the Directorate
General of Technical lI)evelopment. We are proud that today, by and large, all the
road and bridge making machinery, with the exception of few sophisticated items,
are being nianufactured indigenously.
The Indian Roads Congress has now brought out a Special Publication giving
names of the manufacturersof various kinds of roadfbridge making machinery, their
sizes, capacities, descriptions, etc. I am sure this publication will serve as a useful
guide for highway engineers responsible for planning and execution of highway
projects.
Although every effort has been made by the Indian Roads Congressto include
the names of all leading manufacturersin the publication, it is quite possible that the
names of some manufacturers may have been left out. It is requested that such
manufacturers who do not find their names in the publication, should send their
details to the Secretariat of the Congress for inclusion in the subsequent edition of
this publication.

PREFACE
(To the Second Edition)
The directory on this subject was first brought out in 1984. During the last
decade, there have been lot of improvements in the methodology and techniques in
the construction of road and bridge works. Anumber of large sized road and bridge
works are now being executed in India with financial assistance from World Bank,
Asian l)eveiopment Bank, OECF Japan etc, deploying latest equipment. Rapid
mechanisation in the road sector has created a great demand of latest sophisticated
road/bridge construction machinery. To meet the demand, a large number of
indigenous manufacturers have started manufacturing latest road construction
machinery independently or incollaboration with foreign firms. This has, therefore,
necessitated updating of existing directory of manufacturers of road/bridge con-
struction machinery.
2. This Second Edition of the Publication has been renamedas “Directory of
Indigenous Manufacturers of Road/Bridge Construction Machinery & Tmportant
Bridge Components”. A new Section containing “Names of the Companies and
their Products” has been added to it to improve the utility of the updated Directory.
3. It maybe notedthat the Directory isonly intendedto giveready infbmiation
about Road/Bridge ConstructionMachinery being manufacturedin the country. The
finns enlisted may or maynot be registered with Government Organisat.ions like
Directorate General Supplies & Disposals, Director General Technical Develop-
ment and Small Scale Industries Department. This Directory should in no way be
taken as an approved list of suppliers of equipment.
4. A number of individuals have contributed to the finalisation of this
directory. I would like to specifically place on record the untiring efforts put in by
S/Shri flR. Gulati, Chief Engineer (Mech.), R.N. Malik, Superintending Engineer
(Mech.), B.D. Makkar, Executive Engineer (Mech.) in the Ministry.
5. In spite of all efforts, there may be shortcomings and errors. Any
suggestions in this regardbe sent to the Indian RoadsCongressfornecessarychanges
in subsequent editions of the Publication.
