6B/9E Compressor R1 Blade New #6BUC2019
Engineering
Background
• Increasing number of 61B sites performing wet
operations (foggers, evaporative coolers, wet
compression, water washes) Squealer tip
• Material debit on R1 blade due to corrosion & erosion will
reduce the expected margin of the blade
Solution
• New blade with machined undercut feature & squealer tip
• Improved root fillet radius with increased blade thickness
near the base of the blade & minor thickness changes
along the span of the airfoil
Benefits
• Blade with better tolerance to corrosion & erosion
• The undercut feature eliminating the risk of fretting- Root fillet
induced cracking through the platform
• Compressor performance (efficiency/flow) maintained Undercut
• Engineered for in-field replacement & does not require
unstacking the rotor or wheel tipping in the factory

All rotor blades & stator vanes, including IGVs with

improved surface finish from 25Ra to 16Ra

Benefits
- Output & Heat Rate Improvement
- Better compressor Efficiency
- Lower degradation
- Low dust accumulation
- Consider for application during RLE,
rotor repairs, major inspections
without affecting outage duration

Compressor blades and vanes with GECC-1
Compressor coated with Background
GECC-1 • GECC-1, a slurry coating with ceramic top layer,
provides improved erosion and corrosion resistance,
with minimal impact to compressor performance
• Moisture may be present in the compressor during
operation up to stage 5, where it usually becomes
warm enough to prevent condensation

Test Site
• Extremely corrosive environment, with previous
associated airfoil events
• No inlet air treatment used on site
• Hydrophobic HEPA inlet filtration system
• Minimal to no wet operations
Findings
GECC-1 coating • Unit operated for >25,000 hours
applied to a 6B
• No visible corrosion pitting was seen
Blade
• Minor coating erosion noted on forward
compressor airfoil leading edges
• Significant corrosion resistance improvement over
uncoated parts 51

Stainless steel rings for Stator Vane 1 -4
www.slido.com
ATQi now, available now #6BUC2019

• GE has introduced new SS stator vane ring segments for the Stage 1 stator
• Ring material changed from carbon steel to stainless steel
• SS rings have better resistance to corrosion and oxidation between the vane/ring
and the ring/casing interface
• Increased the number of ring segments from 6 to 12 → Easier to remove during
maintenance
• Direct replacement to the existing ring segments
• Shimless configuration

Hardware replacement can be done during planned maintenance activity
