SUCCESS STORY OF THE MONTH

Valuable lesson: No one likes foamy beer

When Justin started the business, he and his employees filled cans manually for their small
clientele. But as demand increased, he evaluated his equipment and methods in order to keep up
– and that's when he learned a valuable lesson.

Justin upgraded to an electric-powered centrifugal pump mounted in his mobile canning trailer
and found out the hard way that its limitations increased the temperature and introduced more
oxygen into the beer, causing foam and ultimately killing the flavor.

"Brewers spend a significant amount of time hand-crafting their beer, and they take great pride
in the ingredients they use and the flavors they create," he said. "So when it comes to canning,
their priority is maintaining the flavor and quality of their beer."

Finally, Justin replaced that foamy pump with ARO's FDA-compliant air-operated diaphragm
pump. The new pump lets Northwest Canning manage the air pressure more effectively to match
other variables, like temperature and dissolved carbon dioxide in the beer. Now every ounce is
treated gently.

"A gentle canning process extends the beer's shelf life and maintains the carefully crafted flavor
of each brew – and that makes my clients happy," Justin said. "When the canning happens
quickly and at maximum capacity, I'm satisfied because I can get back on the road and serve
more clients. With the ARO FDA-compliant pump, Northwest Canning is now the fastest mobile
cannery on the road."

5 Reasons the Craft Beer Industry

is Moving to Cans

Convenience: Cans are lighter and easier to

transport
Freshness: Cans block light and oxygen
better, preserving beer's integrity longer
Sustainability: Lighter cans are easier to
ship and leave a smaller carbon footprint.
Improved Technology: Innovations led to
cans that function better, including newly
designed pouring lips that accentuate beer's
aromatics and re-sealable cans.
Smart Business: Breweries can save money
by using mobile canning companies like
Northwestern; in-house canning operations
are cheaper to run and take up less space.
Also, cans cost less than glass bottles.
