LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 9

Date: July 23, 2019
Time: 8:30 A.M. – 9:30 A.M.
Section: 9-Integrity
I.OBJECTIVES

A. Content Standards
The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of quadratic equations,
inequalities and functions, and rational algebraic equations.

B. Performance Standards
The learner is able to investigate thoroughly mathematical relationships in various
situations, formulate real – life problems involving quadratic equations, inequalities and
functions, and rational algebraic equations and solve them using a variety of strategies.

C. Learning Competencies
At the end of 60 – minute period, 80% of the students should be able to solved equations
transformable to quadratic equations (not written in standard form)

II. CONTENT
1. Subject Matter : Equations Transformable into Quadratic Equations
2. References : Mathematics 9 Learner’s Material by Merden L. Bryant et. al
pages 79-80
3. Methods : Discussion, Drill
4. Materials : Visual aids, whiteboard, marker, and worksheet,

III. PROCEDURE:

A. Routine
 Opening Prayer
 Checking of Attendance

B. Lesson Proper
a. Motivation
 Let’s do the 4-Pics One-Word!
Arrange the jumbled word N A S T F R O R M using the pictures below:
 Review: Solve each quadratic equations using any method:
1. 𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 + 4 = 0
2. 𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 − 10 = 0
3. 𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 − 14 = 0

b. Presentation of the Lesson

 The game will be used as an introduction to present the topic Equations
Transformable into Quadratic Equation (not written in standard form.)
 Discuss the following examples below:
Solve:
Example #1. x (x - 5) = 36
 This quadratic equation that is not written in standard form.
 To write the quadratic equation in standard form, simplify the expression x
(x - 5).
x (x – 5) = 36 x² - 5x = 36
 Write the resulting quadratic equation in standard form.
x² - 5x = 36 x² - 5x – 36 = 0
 Use any of the four methods of solving quadratic equations in finding the
solutions of the equation x² - 5x – 36 = 0.
 Try factoring in finding the roots of the equation.
x² - 5x – 36 = 0 (x – 9) (x + 4)
(x – 9) = 0 or (x + 4) = 0
x = 9 or x = -4
To check:
x=9 x = -4
x (x – 5) = 36 x (x – 5) = 36
9 (9 – 5) = 36 -4 (-4 – 5) = 36
9 (4) = 36 -4 (-9) = 36
36 = 36 36 = 36
 If the obtained values of x make the equation x (x – 5) = 36 true, then the
solutions of the equation are: x = 9 or x = -4
Example #2. x (x + 1) = 2
x (x + 1) = 2 x² + 1x = 2
x² + 1x = 2 x² + 1x – 2 = 0
x² + 1x – 2 = 0
(x – 1) (x + 2)
x – 1 = 0 or x + 2 = 0
x = 1 or x = -2
Example #3. (x + 5)² + (x – 2)² = 37
(x + 5)² + (x – 2)² = 37 x² + 10x + 25 + x² - 4x + 4 = 37
x² + x² + 10x – 4x + 25 + 4 = 37
2x² + 6x + 29 = 37
2x² + 6x + 29 – 37 = 0
2x² + 6x – 8 = 0
2x² + 6x – 8 = 0 (2x – 2) (x + 4) = 0
2x – 2 = 0 or x + 4 = 0
x = 1 or x = -4

c. Fixing Skills
 Class Activity
Transform each of the following equations into a quadratic equation in the form
ax² + bx + c = 0. Answer the questions below.
1. x (x+5) = 2
2. (s + 6)² = 15
3. (t +2)² + (t – 3)² = 9
4. (2r + 3)² + (r + 4) ² = 10
5. (m – 4)² + (m – 7)² = 15

d. Generalization
Equations which can be transformed into quadratic equations can be solved using the
techniques / methods of solving quadratic equations.

IV. EVALUATION
