  Chapter 1

  Introduction

This final project is about writing a bilingual prospectus on English Department

Politeknik Negeri Bandung. This chapter explains the background, problem

identification, aim, characteristics of the product, methods of production, significance

of the product, scope and limitation, and organization of the report.

  1.1 Background

Politeknik Negeri Bandung (Polban) is one of vocational higher institutions

which focuses on practical majors. Basically, Polban has engineering and non-

engineering study programs. The engineering study programs are Civil Engineering,

Mechanical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Software

Engineering, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineering, and Energy

Engineering. The non-engineering study programs are Accounting Department,

Business Administration Department, and English Department. English Department is

one of the newest departments in Polban.

English Department was established in 2006. It offers Diploma 3 (D-3) in

English language. It is a three-year program at tertiary level of vocational higher

education. Since the program focuses on more practical skills, the curriculum is

designed into 60% for practical skills and 40% for theories. The subjects in the

department are divided into four categories. They are national subjects, institution

subjects, department subjects, and study program subjects. There are also co-

curriculum such as an industry visit, guest lecturers, a personal grooming class, and a

1

table manner course. The co-curriculum supports the subjects that have been learned

in class.

The vision of the English Department is “to be an outstanding study program

which is innovate and adaptive to the language development for communication to

support industries and business both nationally and internationally” (English

Department Politeknik Negeri Bandung, 2018). The study program focuses on practical

English skills which are mostly required in the field of business. It is somewhat

different from other English study programs in other universities which basically offer

literature, linguistics or teaching programs. In some ways, the department might not be

widely known by industries and students as currently, the majority of students come

from West Java. Therefore, it needs to be promoted more widely.

Currently, English Department has a website and leaflets. However, these two

media are not enough because the information does not cover detail information such

as students’ activities, finance, study mode, campus life, and enrollment. Consequently,

the department must have another marketing tool to cover more detailed information

about English Department for the prospective students and industries who may employ

the graduates.

According to the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary book, “prospectus is

a book or printed document that gives information about a school, college, etc. in order

to advertise” (2010, p.1178). Furthermore, prospectus currently remains the most

important information source for students, despite a growth in the Internet use (Briggs,

2006). Thus, the prospectus is very useful for the prospective students and industries

2

to gain as much as possible information since the prospectus will contain more detail

information
about the English Department than leaflets and website.

This prospectus is produced in Indonesian and English versions because the

intended readers who read this book are mostly Indonesian high school students who

may not be able to understand English easily and also industries and other stakeholders

who might not only come from Indonesia. Readers who do not speak English will have

the information about English Department by reading the Indonesian version.

Meanwhile, readers who speak in English may read the English version.

1.2 Problem Identification

There are several problems that are found so the present product is needed to

be developed. First, the department does not have a prospectus for its marketing tool.

The second is that many people may not know that Polban as a polytechnic has an

English study program as well. The third is that English Department Polban has a

different focus from that of other English Departments in other universities. The

subjects offered by English Department support the students to develop English

practical skills that are mostly applied in business.

Thus, the present product may assist the English department in promoting its

study program to wider senior high school students, industries, and other stakeholders.

  1.3 Aim

The aim of this project is writing a bilingual prospectus about English

Department Polban in order to inform senior high school students, industries, and other

stakeholders about the English Department Polban.

1.4 Characteristics of the Product

According to Mclntyre and Pruzinsky (2017), there are several elements in

writing texts; audience and purpose, content and theme, tone and mood, stylistic

devices, and structure.

a. Audience and purpose

The intended audiences of this project are prospective Indonesian high school

students and possibly students from overseas, and industries. In addition, the audience

may also be people who are interested in having cooperation with English Department

at Polban. As the target audience might not be only from Indonesia and most

prospective students who come from Indonesia speak Indonesian, the prospectus is

written in Indonesian and English. This present product also gives detailed information

on English Department to the prospective students who want to study in the English

Department at Polban.

b. Content and theme

The contents of this prospectus are mainly information on how to study in the

English Department Polban. The prospectus gives information on a brief description of

Bandung, a brief history of English Department, campus life, accommodation and

living cost, students’ services, facilities, study program, finance, enrollment, and

4

current English Department students and graduates. Moreover, this bilingual

prospectus
also provides information of location and contacts, glossary,

acknowledgement, and project team.

The theme of the prospectus is “learning for the best”. It shows that English

Department is an excellent and trustworthy place to study and develop the students’

communication skills in English used in industries and workplace.

  c. Tone and mood

This prospectus uses formal language but friendly, communicative, and persuasive

which hopefully may make the readers interested and curious, so they want to study at

the English Department Polban.

d. Stylistic devices

The texts of this product are written in the first person point of view, or “we”

form, and the second person point of view, or “you” form. Furthermore, this prospectus

also uses common vocabulary for education aspects and figurative language to make

the text more vivid. Some writing techniques such as descriptive, narrative, and

persuasive are applied. Moreover, the prospectus is written in English and Bahasa

Indonesia.

e. Structure

The prospectus is written in two versions which are separated into two books;

the English version and the Indonesian version. Although the books are made

separately, the contents and the meaning are the same. However, the length both of the

text may not be exactly the same. The content of English and Indonesian versions is

5

divided into three sections: front matter, body matter, and end matter. The content of

each part
