Advanced Intelligent Completions Applications in Production Wells to Improve

Reservoir Management for Production Optimization.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM;
To meet the increasing demand for fuel new hydrocarbon prospects, need to be explored, and
recoverable production from existing and future proved reserves must be maximized this can be
achieved by maximizing the production of proved reserves by Intelligent Well Completions. The
intelligent well technology provides the capability to remotely monitor and control multiple
production zones using Inflow Control Valves installed on the production tubing.
The determination of an optimal IWC combination for maximum hydrocarbon recovery and
minimal water production; with a high reliability and relatively low attached risks.

GOALS TO BE ACHIEVED;

The installation of intelligent completions in injector well were to improve reservoir management,
reduce well construction complexity and achieve cost optimization also the aspects of well
performance in commingled injection mode.

It will actually help operators to optimize production without costly well intervention and
maximize reservoir efficiency by

1. Maintaining a uniform production profile along the wellbore.

2. Manage future risks (early water or gas breakthrough) and mitigate the potential for
sand production.
3. Increase recovery and extend the economic life of well.
4. Reducing Operational expenditure.
5. Automated regulation of flow by downhole ICVs, controlled from remote locations
6. Prevent routine intervention for reservoir-management purposes.
7. Self-optimize and automate wells and process facilities.
INTELLIGENT COMPLETIONS;

IWCs or Intelligent Well Completion is a permanent system capable of collecting, transmitting,

and analyzing wellbore production, reservoir and completion integrity data and enabling remote
action to better control reservoir well and production processes.

This is achieved by running gauges downhole to study REAL TIME data per zone in order to make
proactive maintenance rather than reactive decisions by incorporating pressure and
temperature sensors; multiphase flowmeters; flow-control devices and interval control devices.

The production and reservoir data acquired with downhole sensors can improve the understanding
of reservoir behavior and assist the well to take on simultaneous functions-injection well, and
production well.

INFLOW CONTROL DEVICES;

Inflow Control Devices (ICD) or Inflow Control Valves (ICV) are considered key
equipments in Intelligent Completion Wells. They provide variability in the
control/regulation of fluid flow through the single or multilateral wells, by utilizing multiple
open and close flow ports. ICD are usually of 2 types; binary (open and close control) or
variable (intermittent, stage-wise control).

DOWNHOLE SENSORS;

IWC Hardware can be broadly divided into the monitors (sensors), analysis (surface
computers) and control (ICVs). Sensors used in IWC are installed downhole for the purpose
of measuring parameters such as pressure, temperature, flow rate, seismic waves etc.
They may be in the form of downhole gauges or optical fibers. For example

 Downhole Pressure Sensors to detect a zone of abnormal pressure

 Temperature Sensors to detect gas influx and many more
AN ABRIDGED METHODOLOGY FOR OPTIMIZATION;

Based on operations there are so many methods to achieve optimization. For instance, valves
positions (open or close), control of the flow sensors, ICDs FCVs (shut 0 and open 1).

Simulation of the model of a producer well and optimization through different accessories like
Multiple Valves, Sensors and Bean Sizes. Workflow guide of ICVs and FCVs and comparisons.

RESERVOIR HETEROGENEITY;

Reservoirs are non-uniform in their properties such as permeability, porosity, pore size
distribution, wettability, connate water saturations and fluid properties. Intelligent Well
Completion’s profitability application is greatly dependent on the inherent, pre-existing properties
of reservoir as reservoir’s heterogeneity causes a variation in the deliverability of each layer/zone.
So it must be assessed and verified.

PROACTIVE AND REACTIVE APPROACHES;

A Proactive approach to Intelligent Well technology applies an optimization algorithm to

achieve an optimal ICD configuration, by using real time production data from downhole
sensors in decision making. The aim is to prevent a future undesired event; yield a maximum
hydrocarbon recovery, and a minimum water production without the need for continuous
operator intervention.

Reactive Approach is any approach after a particular event occurred.

INTERSECT;

Intersect is basically high resolution standard reservoir simulator which solves the challenging
reservoir modeling jobs with fast and robust planning. It has multiple benefits and features. We
will be using this for advanced downhole equipment such as inflow control devices ICDs and flow
control valves (FCVs) with well models.
SELECTION OF THE BEST PLACEMENT FOR INTELLIGENT INJECTION WELL:
Determining the best location for new wells is a complex problem. The benefits of intelligent
completions depend on well performance which in turn depends on well placement with respect to
the permeability and porosity of the formation.
In order to improve the ultimate oil recovery during water flooding, it is essential to find the
optimum injection well placement through performance curves.
 Determine the suitable injection well placement by maximizing the cumulative oil
production.
 Involvement of advanced downhole equipment such as ICDs and FCVs.
 Real time measurement and transmission of reservoir properties for better reservoir
management.
TIMELINE;

1-month research and reading work to understand the required study and history reading as well.
Data Acquisition to make a design for well completions in next 1 month.
Comparison run through different scenarios and Compilation and Result Generation in next 1
month.
