Is artificial intelligence getting too advanced? Artificial intelligence (A.I.) has become a

major concern to many around the world. The world is closer than ever to creating a robot that

can think on its own. We have already developed cars that can make decisions and can drive

themselves. Who is to say that these technologies aren’t able to be hacked for a new type of

terrorism. What if people could take over your car to destroy things and kill people? This is a

concern that should be brought up. When do we say that we have gone too far? We might be too

late to go back.

I love advancement in technology and the creation of new things but sometimes it worries

me. There are a lot of bad people in the world and there is no telling what type of things can and

will be done with technology. I don’t believe that we should stop creating and thinking freely

with our ideas, instead we should try to train as many people to defend as there are inventing. If

we do this then we can prevent destruction while also being able to freely create. A society that

isn’t allowed to freely create or is prevented from using their minds is one that will inevitably

fall.

One of the most well-known examples of artificial intelligence would be IBM’s Watson.

This is one of the smartest pieces of technology on the planet. IBM’s Watson is referred to as a

supercomputer. It has even competed against humans on the popular television show, jeopardy,

and won. This shows just how much better computers can be compared to people. There have

now been computers developed that can think like the human brain. This meaning that they can

have a type of emotion similar to the human brain.

Artificial intelligence is definitely a topic that is relevant to everyone. You may not think

that it is very relevant now but, everyday there is more and more technology being put into place
all around us. We live in a society that revolves around technology and it is everywhere that we

look. We are so close to having cars that drive themselves and are programmed to make their

own decisions. For example, if a self-driving car has to either hit a group of people or just one

person, the car will chose the one person to minimize the death toll. There have also been robots

that have a minds close to a human and can create their own thoughts based on a number of

factors. One of the first robots, that was given the name Sophia, said that she was going to

destroy the human race. That is like something out of a movie. If we aren’t aware of all the

possible scenarios of giving a computer the ability to think, then things could go terribly wrong.

Similar to all of the Jurassic Park movies, sometimes we create things without thinking and it

could mean the death of a lot of people. This will pose the question, just because we have the

knowledge to do something, does that me that we should do it?

I have had the privilege to work with types of artificial intelligence and see where

technology is going. It is truly fascinating how far we have come. We can now do so many

different functions with these technologies. For example, in one of my high school classes I was

able to work with robots that we could program. It was fascinating to see that even as high

school students we could create advanced technology that would seem impossible 10 years ago.

This first-hand experience has allowed me to see just the tip of what we as a society can create.

There have been many video games created lately depicting the future being run by

robots. One of the best games being Detroit: Become Human. It depicts a storyline involving

three robots that escape from being prisoners. The creators consulted with many experts on

artificial intelligence to create the game. This shows that other people are worried about the

potential risks that creating thinking robots pose to society. There are also other games and

movies that have been created about the danger of artificial intelligence. These include movies
such as Robocop or Chappie. Both involve robots harming people or even being a threat to

society at points. Artificial intelligence has been a topic that people have discussed for many

years and will be for many to come.

Another danger to society that artificial intelligence poses is the loss of human jobs to

robots. Most factories are now using robots to perform tasks that used to be done by humans.

They are more productive, never need a break, and are less likely to have an error than a human.

It’s not just factory jobs that are being affected. We are trying to develop stores that are cashier

less. There is an amazon store that you grab what you want and walk out. You are billed to your

amazon account. This is amazing and cool but that means that people have lost their jobs as

cashiers to artificial intelligence. Robots are making us as a society lazier. We have robots that

can do everything for us. For example, we have robots that will vacuum our floors for us. We

don’t even have to go turn it on. The robot stays at its docking station and will turn on and move

around the floor to clean up dirt and other messes. After it is done cleaning it will go back to its

docking station without a human having to even touch the vacuum. This reminds me of the

movie WALL-E. In this movie, it shows people of the future have become so fat that they can’t

even move, and they have robots that can do everything for them. The humans can barely do

anything and lay in a bed that floats around to take them to different places. This is a major

possibility of the future of human society. If we don’t stop letting robots do everything for us

then we could potentially live the same lives as the people in the movie.

Overall, artificial intelligence is becoming very risky. We don’t know for sure how

exactly it will go because we aren’t all the way there yet. We should know how to protect

ourselves from the potential dangers that artificial intelligence poses. We want to preserve our

society for as long as possible and that means we might have to do something about the
technology that we are being allowed to create. Should we be developing such great technology?

I love seeing the new things that are being developed and I think that they are awesome, but they

can worry me sometimes. I think that somethings shouldn’t be created. The idea is great, and it

would be cool, but things don’t always turn out the way that they seem like they are going to.

You never know what will happen until it has already happened. We can’t predict the future only

prepare ourselves for what potential things could happen.

Some questions that I want to research are:

1. What risks does artificial intelligence pose to human society?

2. How far are we away from creating self-functioning robots?

3. Should we be worried about artificial intelligence?

4. How can we protect ourselves from the potential dangers?
