Explanation

Introduction

*Philippines' main islands are Luzon, Mindanao, Mindoro, Leyte,

Samar, Negros, and Panay.

History of the Philippines

*The Philippines has a rich history combining Asian, European, and

American influences. Prior to Spanish colonization in 1521, the Filipinos
had a rich culture and were trading with the Chinese and the Japanese.

Continents of the world

*Now we have 7 continents and 5 oceans which are home to all of

us and millions of other living organisms. Let us learn about each of
these seven continents and five oceans that make up our planet earth.

Asia

*Asia comprises 30 percent of the whole land area of the world

and is home to 49 countries. Asia is can be called the most lively and
teeming of all the continents because more than 60 percent of the
world population lives here.

Africa

*It is also the second most populated continent in the world.

Covering about six percent of the earth’s surface, Africa has an area
of about 30.2 million square kilometers.

North America

*North America lies entirely on the Northern hemisphere and

almost wholly within the western hemisphere. Comprising about 16.5
percent of the total land area in the world, this continent is home to
23 independent countries.

South America

*It is a triangular shaped continent that is quite compact with a

broader northern side with the southern edge tapering to a point,
known as the Cape Horn in Chile.

Antartica

*. It is the southernmost continent in the world and surrounds

the geographic South Pole. Situated in the Antarctic region, which is
almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle, Antarctica is surrounded
by the southern ocean on all sides. Covering about 14 million square
kilometres Antarctica is twice the size of Australia, which is the
smallest continent in the world.

Europe

*Europe covers about 10,180,000 square kilometers, which

accounts for about 2% of the surface of the earth, and a 6.8% of the
total land area on the earth. This makes it the second smallest
continent as per the surface area. Russia is the largest country in
Europe in terms of the population as well as the area.

Australia

*Australia is a continent in the Southern Hemisphere, which

comprises the countries of Australia, Tasmania, Seram, New Guinea,
Timor, and other neighbouring islands. It is the smallest among the
seven continents of the world, and lies on a continental shelf.

Oceans of the world

Pacific Ocean
*Covering almost one third of the earth’s surface area, Pacific
Ocean has a total area of about 165.25 million square kilometres.
Pacific Ocean corresponds to 46 percent of the earth’s water surface
and is larger than all the land area on the earth combined together.

Atlantic Ocean

*It comes behind Pacific Ocean with a total area of about

106,400,000 square kilometres which is about 20 percent of the total
surface area of the earth. Atlantic Ocean represents about 29 percent
of the water surface area of the world.

Indian Ocean

*It comes behind pacific and Atlantic ocean in size and holds
almost 20 percent of the water on the earth’s surface. It is the
youngest and physically most complex ocean in the world and covers one
fifth of the total ocean area in the world. Indian Ocean draws its
boundaries with Asia to its north, Africa on its west, Australia to its
east and Southern ocean and Antarctica to its south.

Antartic Ocean

*. The Antarctic Ocean has many names like Southern Ocean, The
great Southern Ocean, South Polar Ocean, Austral Ocean etc.

Artic Ocean

*It is located in the northern hemisphere and centrally

approximating the North Pole which is mostly the Arctic North Polar
Region. It is usually recognized as the only smallest and shallowest of
all the five major oceanic divisions in the world.

Equator

*The equator is halfway between the North Pole and the South
Pole There, the surface of the planet is parallel to the axis of rotation.
The equator divides the surface into the northern hemisphere and
the southern hemisphere.

Prime Meridian

* The Prime Meridian runs through Greenwich, England and is at

0° longitude.

Latitude

*Latitude is used together with longitude to specify the precise

location of features on the surface of the Earth.

Longitude

* It is an angular measurement, usually expressed in degrees and

denoted by the Greek letter lambda. Meridians connect points with the
same longitude.
