AC Drives- Purpose
• The purpose of AC drive is to control the speed of an AC motor
• With no AC Drive, the AC motor will only operate at rated speed
• 2 pole motor @ 60Hz => 3600 rpm (minus slip)
• 4 pole motor @ 60Hz => 1800 rpm (minus slip)
• 8 pole motor @ 60Hz => 900 rpm (minus slip)

• Why would you want to control the speed of an AC motor?

• Process requires it e.g winder/unwinder
• Energy Savings e.g pumps and fans
Role of an Electric Drive

• Role of Electric Drive: Efficient conversion of power from electrical to mechanical and vice versa
• Role of PPU: Delivers appropriate form of frequency and voltage to the machine (as required by the
load or the prime mover)
