INTRODUCTION

1. Backround

A. Puritan History (1620-1660)

This poem comes from the puritanical period (1620-1660) where in the puritan priest
very uphold the Christian religion. Initially purists are religious movements whose teachings
and actions are in the form of a desire to keep the simplicity of life Simplicity of life based on
strict religious moral values and to understand the worldliness of the world. But because of
the unwise pressure and actions of the puritans by James 1 and those whom most of the
servants have disliked because of their despotism, the puritan movement became a powerful
political movement against the king. It is a puritan movement that eventually the tyrannical
kings are too busy and charles are expelled. During the puritan period there is also a
'commonwealth' or government tax collector under olivr cromwell but ended in the year 1600
when Charless 11 ruled. In this puritan period there is a clash between you, the puritan and
the catholic group because the puritans ask permission of the king to practice the church's
resurrection with their own rituals and more sermon preaching. .1

B. who is jhon mylton?

John Milton was born in London on December 9, 1608 to John and Sara Milton. She
has an older sister Anne, and Christopher's brother, and several siblings who died before
reaching adulthood. As a child, John Milton attends St. Paul's School, and during his life he
studied Latin, Greek, Italian, Hebrew, French, and Spanish. He attended Christ's College,
Cambridge, graduating in 1629 with a Bachelor of Arts, and 1632 with a Master of Arts. After
Cambridge, Milton spent six years living with his family in Buckinghamshire and studying
independently. Milton is a Puritan who believes in biblical authority, and opposes religious
institutions such as the Church of England, and the monarchy, with which he is interwoven. It
was in these years that Milton married for the first time. In 1642, at the age of 34, he married
17-year-old Mary Powell. The two separated for several years, during which time Milton
wrote The Divorce Tracts, a series of publications supporting the divorce. The couple reunited
and had four children before Mary died in 1652. In 1652 Milton was completely blind. In
1656, he married Katherine Woodcock. He died in 1658. By the end of 1659, Milton was

imprisoned for his role in the fall of Charles I and the rise of the Commonwealth. He was
released, probably because of the influence of strong supporters.2

C. History Poetry "On Time"

This poetry to make on (1632-1638) in this poetic puritan poem entitled "On Time" is
one of the greatest works of jhon milton This poem is some of the shortest poems in the work
of jhon milto like some other poems such as Song On Morning, At Solmen Music, Arccades.
This poem and some other short poems are made at Horton. 3 This poem is in the form with
very thorough by Milton and even this poetic structure does not follow the rules that exist
instead of this poetry creates its own rules. Milton also makes this poem so dramatic that
readers can sense what is contained in the words in which the poem is made to awaken those
who are too focused on the world with more emphasis on words such as time.

D. Definition Objective Approach

a. Arccoding by wellek and warren (1990)

The objective approach is an approach that focuses attention to the literary

work itself. This approach views literature as an autonomous structure and is
independent of its relationship to reality, author or reader. This approach is also
referred to by Welek & Waren (1990) as an intrinsic approach because the study
focused on the intrinsic elements of literary works considered to have its own
consistency, coherence and truth.

1. Poetry "On Time" by jhon mylton

On time

Fly envious Time, till thou run out thy race,

Call on the lazy leaden-stepping hours,

Whose speed is but the heavy Plummets pace;

And glut thy self with what thy womb devours,

Which is no more then what is false and vain,

And melyly mortal dross;

So little is our loss,

So little is thy gain.

For when as each thing bad thou hast entomb'd,

And last of all, thy greedy self consum'd,

Then long Eternity shall greet our bliss

With an individual kiss;

And Joy shall overtake us as a flood,

When every thing that is sincerely good

And perfectly divine,

With Truth, and Peace, and Love will ever shine

About the Supreme Throne

Of him, t'whose happy-making sight alone,

When once we heav'nly-guided soul shall clime,

Then all this Earthy grosnes quit,

Attir'd with Stars, we shall for ever sit,

Triumphing over Death, and Chance, and thee, O Time!4

2. Sound stratum

1. Shape

a. This poem is a kind of Hymn poem.

Where the hime is an idol's poem to God, the homeland, or hero. The
characteristics of the hymn are songs of praise that honor a god, god,
hero, homeland, alma mater (guide in the World of Literature). As the
age progresses, the meaning of the hymn changes which the hymn sense
now is as a sung poem, compliments of the respected such as the teacher,

the hero, the god, the divine god. Based on this poem is called hymn
because the poem is very clear about religious. This "On Time" poem is
so uniquely made that the pengaran make up this poem by not forming a
different pattern for each poem in which the poem is
ABABCDDCEEFFGGHHIIJKKJ. and consists of 22 lines and the author
also does not form a stanza in this poem the author makes it a stanza with
each line interconnected as well as the author mebentuk lines in pairs in
poems like row 1 and 2, 3 and 4. However there are some lines that are
slightly protruding ie the 7th and 8th lines but this line does not affect the
stanza because the pengrang just want to put more emphasis on time.
According to some of the links I read, this poem consists of two long
sentences which appear in the author's way of arranging each line with
the end of a semic (,) and semi colon (;) in several lines..5
b. Sound
In this poem titled on time it has a sound
1. Alliteration: It is a repetition of the same consonant sound in
lines of poetry; usually at the beginning of consecutive words /
words.
2. Asonansi:
It is a repetition of the same vowel sounds in consecutive words /
words in lines of poetry.

3. Layers of meaning

In jhon milton's poem entitled "On Time" this can be interpreted as follows:

1. Fly envious Time, till thou run out thy race,

This first line indicates that the time passes so quickly. Until time also that
will determine the death of a person.
2. Call on the lazy leaden-stepping hours
The second line implies that the author feels that Time is moving very
slowly. It is as if the author is disgusted with the "lazy hours of dismissal," as
if the author is disgusted with his wasted time in vain and he feels this is the
time that must be at speed
3. Whose speed is but the heavy Plummets pace
The third line of the author indicates that time runs very slowly even l Slow
time compared to movement, quite precise, but moves very slowly by ticking
in an hour, slowly descending and thus giving strength to the time slice.
4. And glut thy self with what thy womb devours,
The fourth line implies that time will devour all living things just as digestion
will digest the food we eat as it is the time that the author will indulge all
living things (insulting)
5. Which is no more then what is false and vain,
The fifth row again explains the fourth row that what is in time is what is true
and what is futile makes no difference because time is so arrogant and
arrogant
6. And meerly mortal (fana) dross (garbage);
7. So little is our loss,
8. So little is thy gain.
On the 6th, 7th and 8th row the author mnegisikan what has been devoured
by time will make us a little loss namu little bit you find here the author states
that what has been devoured time will make us a lot of loss because time
wasted
9. For when as each thing bad thou hast entomb'd,
On the 9th line again emphasizes that what has been wasted and devoured by
time will make a regret that will bury you in remorse.
10. And last of all, thy greedy (greed) self consum'd,
Then the author again states that what we profit from the greed of time and
all that will harm yourself because time is so greedy and greedy.
11. Then long Eternity shall greet our bliss
Then in the tenth line the author implies that real happiness is in heaven a real
happiness after time grabs everything then we will encounter a real happiness
on the eternity of heaven
12. With an individual kiss;
The author suggests a break with a kiss
13. And Joy shall overtake us as a flood,
Then the feeling of joy that is felt will hit anyone.
14. When every thing that is sincerely good
15. And perfectly divine,
The 14th and 15th rows state that everything is very good or as good as it is a
perfect divine that will not be invincible by time
16. With Truth, and Peace, and Love will ever shine
17. About the Supreme Throne
18. Of him, t'whose happy-making sight alone,
Then no different with the lines to 16,17 and 18 like the bari to 14 and 15
depicting the greatness of the high god who always gives the happiness that
we will get in time later
19. When once we heav'nly-guided soul shall clime,
The 19th line implies that death will come and will unite us to our belief in
God
20. Then all this Earthy grosnes quit,
21. Attir'd with Stars, we shall for ever sit,
22. Triumphing over Death, and Chance, and thee O Time
Line to 20.21 and 22 here the author explains and gives the key to his poem
entitled on time that when it comes to the time all men will die and return to
it and end all affairs in this world and return us to god. When death comes to
us then all the time will stop and come to the eternal happiness in heaven.
4. Third layer
1. Objects expressed in this poem are Time, Plummets, wombs, mortal dross, bliss, soul,
clime, Stars, Death.
2. Performer or character: time.
3. The author's world is the story, which is the world created by the story-teller of this story
of poetry is sebgai follows.

hinting that the time passes so quickly. Until time also that will determine the
death of someone sometimes time runs very slowly and wasted in vain even time will
devour all living things like digestion will digest the food we eat like that time and what
in lahab time is what is right and what is futile makes no difference because time is so
arrogant and arrogant that stressing what time dilahab will be a useless waste. And it will
make your losses so little profit that you get things that have been wasted to leave a regret
remorse that will bury you in regret it. what we profit from the greed of time and all that
will harm yourself because time is so greedy and greedy. a break with kisses and joys that
are felt to hit anyone. show the goodness, the fighting, the Truth and the other, it is only
the property of the tuhany who will give happiness in due time so that death will come
and will unite us to our belief in the god Then all this humble violence stop, Dress with
the Stars, we must always sit, Death, and chance, and you O Time.

5. Story world
This poem when set to a dramatic tone of voice, with a deep voice that creates another idea
not to beat time in the sense to live forever, yet everyone and everything that exists in the
world do not escape from time, every day passes by unseen years - year after year. But
everything in this world that is animate will surely die and that their time has run out. But
sometimes people feel the time is so slow that many things they wasted. And what has been
passed will never happen again here is where sometimes people feel regret every time surely
humans will feel the joy of humankind to remember that the truth, the deity, it is all the
greatness of god and the eternal happiness is only in heaven and everything in the world will
go back to him and when the apocalypse comes then stop the whole world.
6. Metaphysical.
This poem contains the author's feelings about the time that one day will be taken away by us
then we must use the best time possible so that no regrets and losses caused by time wasted in
vain because of our ignorance. Even time can not defeat death therefore we are drowned by
time and return to perfect god. What do we look for in the world to waste our time in
happiness? Over time the happiness will also be swallowed by time, power, power is also
denied by time. If your time has been stopped then there is nothing you can do. Because
eternal happiness is only in heaven and divine san. This meaning is contained in a poem
entitled 'On Time' by jhon milton

E. Definition of Theory Mimetic

1. Arccoding by abrams, 1981

Mimetic approach is an approach that in the study of literature in the form of understanding
the relationship of literary works to reality or reality. The word mimetic comes from the word
mimesis (Greek) which means imitation. In this approach literary works are regarded as
copies of nature or life (Abrams, 1981)6. To be able to apply it in the literature review, it takes
data related to the reality that exist outside of literary works. Usually in the form of
background or source creator of literary works to be reviewed. For example, the novel of the
1920s which tells a lot about "mating" force. So it takes source and culture in the year that
form the background of the source of its creation.

Based on the definition according to Abrams in which he states that the mimetic
approach is an approach in the study of literature in the form of understanding the relationship
of literary works to reality or reality. Then the mimetic poem 'On Time' by jhon mylton can
be analisys as follows:

The meaning contained in this poem titled "On Time" the author states that human
life is getting worse as he states in his poetry words such as anger, collapse, irritation, greed,
divine, rising, which is very illustrative to man as he goes time. It seems to ignite a time that
can not be seen, heard, touched or kissed. In other words time can not be felt physically but
the fact is time is very cruel where time will continue to walk pay attention to what has been

obtained by human, but human being is not easy to surrender they will keep trying to use time
but this must end when time really stopped when the apocalypse came. Everything that stops
age, life, and even ourselves must stop. In another part of the poem, his poet describes the
attribute of time in the next life that is Paradise Where time becomes uncharitable because
heaven is eternal. The things that really save from the wrath of time. That makes the vision
happy. The author deeply confirms his belief in this poem on the next life where there is
eternal happiness. This poem is of a puritanical age very closely related to the religious
because that is what Milton reflects as a true Christian who shows the whole world's complete
belief in which we will win from time to time. This poem was created by an author named
Jhon Milton through his education at St. John's. Paul's School, then at Christ's College,
Cambridge, where he began writing poetry in Latin, Italian, and English, and prepared to
enter the clergy. and wrote a series of pamphlets that support radical political topics including
divorce morality, press freedom, populism, and murder sanctions. he composed this poem in a
puritanical period in which today's religious influence is so intimate that even he is a believer
of life where he engages in conflict and supports puritans even though he is not directly
involved in conflicts in the puritan priest but he is a very caring for the afterlife and putting
aside the world. this is very compatible with the life of milton in his poem fragment which
states "Then long Eternity shall greet our bliss" in this line of poetry is very clear that he is
very confident of eternal happiness only in heaven where milton been married 3 times and he
also lost his wife ago after four months of the death of his wife for giving birth to their
daughter at the time she also lost her son because this is why milton declares that what is and
what will continue us in time will be taken away by time. This poem also gives a lot of
explanation about the time that is spelled out here in vain poetry on line 4,5,6 and 7Which is
no more then what is false and vain, And melyly mortal dross; "So little is our loss, So little is
thy gai" in this line that milton presses that a lot of wasted time is wasted and that will only
make us lose and very little that we will get as a life of milton very tips with the various
activities that he did he was very appreciative of his time and very well utilize it but as hard as
he tried he will still be defeated by time and will return to the power sebgaimana his faith is
so strong against religion.

F. CONCLUSION

In this poem it teaches us to appreciate the best time possible janga until wasted in vain
because we will regret it. besides, this poem is very teaches us not to be arrogant over the
world because the world is only temporary and when the time has come the death will come
to us, everything in this world is transitory only temporarily as strong as we are against our
time will still lose, what we search in the world of happiness, wealth and the throne.
