CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Being overworked, more specifically in terms of school work, is one of the many struggles

and obstacles faced by students, especially the pupils of the Senior High department. In this

study, the researchers want to know and become cognizant about the various effects and

consequences of being overworked on school requirements to the Senior High School students.

Doing schoolwork, homework and extracurricular tasks are essential in the learning areas of

each and every student. These certain activities and requirements given are useful and they also

serve as a tool in aiding one’s education and learning. In addition to that, they provide support

and assistance to a student’s growth and development in different factors and aspects of their

lives. These certain tasks and activities are fabricated for the sole purpose of positively

contributing and to serve as a handicap for each and every pupil. Although, it is a common

knowledge that has been passed around whereas too much of everything is actually harmful and

could even be detrimental to different aspects of a person’s life and well-being. Thus, it has come

to the thoughts of the researchers to find out and garner information as to what would be the

effects of being overworked, especially in school requirements, or having too many duties to

fulfill as a student, with an open-minded and an unbiased approach.

According to William Crain, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at City College of New York

and the author of Reclaiming Childhood, “Kids are developing more school-related

stomachaches, headaches, sleep problems, and depression than ever before.” These problems are

due to being glued to their desks for 7-8 hours, making time for their extracurricular

1
involvements, possibly a job, and having hours of homework on top of that. Not only that, but

students also face a lot of anxiety in school amongst their peers. When we are constantly

providing students with more and more homework, there will be kids that benefit from it and

others that don’t. When a kid sees that the person sitting next to them is already done with their

assignment, while they’re still stuck on the first problem, it is going to create a competitive

aspect that is only toxic and unbeneficial.

The researchers are receptive to learning and understanding the various effects that being

overworked can bring, specifically, to the Senior High School students. For it has already been

known and is not unbeknownst to many that having to do excessive amount of work, whether or

not a student or working person, regardless the field or industry one belongs to, and also

regardless of one’s walk of life, can produce negative effects whether physically, mentally, and

even emotionally. Hence, the main purpose of this research is to accumulate and obtain

information as well as other data regarding this particular topic.

2
Objectives

1. To determine if the Senior High School students of STI College Las Piñas are being

overworked in school requirements.

2. To know the effects and consequences, inclusion of both positive and negative, of being

overworked, specifically in school activities/tasks.

3. To ascertain and fully understand the information gathered as to the various

consequences and how it could affect one student’s daily life, in addition to that, also

learn what ways and procedures could be done to help reduce and prevent the state of

being overworked in terms of school work.

Statement of the Problem

1. Does being overworked in terms of school requirements affect a student?

2. Does being overworked in school requirements affect one student’s daily life?

3. How does being overworked in school requirements affect students?

4. How does being overworked with regards to school requirements affect one student’s

academic performance?

3
Assumption of The Study

The researchers have formulated certain assumptions in regards to this namely:

Senior High School students who are not overworked will perform better academically in

contrary to the students who are overworked. It has also come to thought that students who

are not overworked will have a better quality of life outside school in comparison to the

students who are overworked. In addition to that, the researchers have also formulated

assumptions whereas those who are overworked will be more vulnerable or susceptible to

being stressed and worn-out as opposed to the students who are not overworked.

Overall these suppositions, it has been of an insight in according to the viewpoint of the

researchers that pupils of the Senior High department who are stacked with school work and

activities will have difficulties in working more efficiently in different aspects of life,

whether academically or on other areas in contrast with the students who are not overworked.

Significance of the Study

Students

This study shall benefit the students as it will instill in them the idea that the

occurrence of this case will help the students understand the effects of being overworked

and also help in reducing the instances of this certain situation.

Teachers

4
This study shall benefit the teachers as it may guide the students in a good way or

helping the students to efficiently manage their time in order to prevent such incidences

of being overworked.

Future researchers

This study may help the future researcher(s) of this study as it can serve as a guide

for them in making a thesis concerning the effects of being overworked on students.

Parents

This study may help the parents in order for them to properly and efficiently guide

their children to prevent the instances of being overworked in terms of school

requirements.
