Online Learning Day 2 – Tuesday, February 4, 2020

English

In English, we are currently learning how to read and write poetry.

When we read or write poetry, there are 5 Elements of Poetry that
we need to think about. The 5 Elements of Poetry are:

1. Figurative Language
2. Imagery
3. Voice
4. Ideas & Content
5. Word Choice

It is important for you to know the 5 Elements of Poetry, so I would

like you to write them down somewhere safe, and review these each
day until you are able to remember them without help.

Today, let’s focus on the element of Imagery.

An image is a picture. Good poems include words that help readers

to picture what’s happening in their minds. The words in a poem
should help readers to imagine what they might see, hear, touch,
taste, or smell (The 5 senses).

Activity
1. First, log into RAZ-Kids and read the collection of poems I have
assigned to you (Nature Poems by Edie Evans).
2. Pick your favourite poem from this collection.
3. Answer the following questions:
a. What poem did you pick?
b. Why was this poem your favourite poem?
c. What words/phrases in the poem helped you to imagine
what was happening in your mind?
d. Make a connection: What does this poem remind you of?
Mathematics
Lesson 13: A Standard Method for Addition
In Mathematics, we are working on Unit 2: Patterns in Addition and
Subtraction. Today, we will be learning to use the standard method
for addition.
Please watch the following two videos to prepare you for today’s
work:

Please review the written explanation of the standard method for
addition below and complete today’s practice questions.

Drama

Before learning how to create drama, we need to understand the 5

Elements of Drama. The 5 Elements of Drama are:

1. Role/character – the thoughts and feelings of the fictional

people, animals, or creatures in a drama
2. Relationship – how the characters in a drama listen and
respond to each other
3. Time and place – the setting of a drama (where and when it
takes place)
4. Tension – mystery or moments of excitement in a drama
5. Focus and emphasis – the main idea or problem in a drama
It is important for you to know the 5 Elements of Drama and their
definitions, so I would like you to write them down somewhere safe,
and review these each day until you are able to remember them
without help.

Today, let’s focus on the element of role/character. The roles or

characters are the thoughts and feelings of the fictional people,
animals, or creatures in a drama.

Activity:

Watch the following video on role/character:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhOBuYQJPEY

Think of a character that you have seen or would like to see in a

drama. Maybe even a character from the play that we saw, James
and the Giant Peach! Draw a picture of that character and next to
your picture, write down how the character is feeling and/or some
things the character might say.

For example, I might draw a picture of a pirate:

Next to my pirate, I might write:

• The pirate is feeling angry and grumpy.

• “Arr! Where’s my treasure?”
• “Has anyone seen my parrot?”

Science & Technology

In Science & Technology, we are starting our unit on Growth and

Changes in Plants. By the end of this unit, you will be able to answer
5 big questions:

• What are the characteristics of a plant?

• What are the similarities and differences between different
types of plants?
• How do we get food from plants?
• Why are plants important to the planet?
• How can we protect plants?

Before beginning the unit, I’d like to see what you already know.

Activity:

Important: Do not look at any photos online before completing the

activity below! This is not a test. I just want to see what you already
know J

Draw a picture of a plant. This can be any type of plant that you like.
When you are drawing your picture, think about the parts of the
plant that can be seen, but also the parts that may be hidden by a
pot or the ground. After drawing and colouring in your picture.
Please label any of the plant parts that you know.
