HYDROSTATIC
FORCE ON CURVE
SURFACES

Introduction to MEASUREMENT OF PRESSURE

• Discuss how a hydrostatic force is acting on a curve
surface

• Explain the application of hydrostatic force in curve

gates, tanks, and dams

• Solve problems related to the hydrostatic force acting

on submerged curve surfaces

FV = 𝛄𝑽𝒐𝒍

F= 𝑭𝑯 𝟐 + 𝑭 𝑽 𝟐

FH = 𝛄𝒉𝑨 cp

Hydrostatic Forces
F = total hydrostatic force

FH = horizontal component of the hydrostatic force; force on

the projection of that surface on a vertical plane perpendicular
to the given direction

FV = vertical component of the hydrostatic force; weight

considering the fluid enclosed by the curved surface and
vertical projection lines extending to the free surface;
= the weight of liquid supported by the surface;
= weight of the liquid displaced by the surface.

Hydrostatic Forces
FV = vertical hydrostatic force
