Chapter 1: - Introduction of Australia

Sources: Australia_map.jpg

2
Australia ,officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a country in the Southern
Hemisphere comprising the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania
and numerous smaller islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Neighboring countries
include Indonesia, East Timor and Papua New Guinea to the north, the Solomon Islands,
Vanuatu and New Caledonia to the northeast and New Zealand to the southeast.

For at least 40,000 years before European settlement in the late 18th century, Australia
was inhabited by indigenous Australians, who belonged to one or more of the roughly
250 language groups.

After sporadic visits by fishermen from the immediate north and discovery by Dutch
explorers in 1606, Australia's eastern half was claimed by Britain in 1770 and initially
settled through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales, founded on 26
January 1788. The population grew steadily in subsequent decades; the continent was
explored and an additional five self-governing Crown Colonies were established.

On 1 January 1901, the six colonies became a federation and the Commonwealth of
Australia was formed. Since Federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal
democratic political system and is a Commonwealth realm. The population is 22
million, with approximately 60% concentrated in and around the mainland state capitals
of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. The nation's capital city is
Canberra, in the Australian Capital Territory.

A prosperous developed country, Australia is the world's thirteenth largest economy.

Australia ranks highly in many international comparisons of national performance such
as human development, quality of life, health care, life expectancy, public education,
economic freedom and the protection of civil liberties and political rights.

1.1.8 Media Release

Resilient tourism returns to growth

The Tourism Forecasting Committee (TFC) today released its new forecasts of tourism
activity in Australia. The TFC forecast that, following the 4% decrease during difficult
conditions last year, the value of tourism to the Australian economy is forecast to regain
some of this loss, rising 3% to $92 billion in 2010. Both international (up 2%) and
domestic (up 3%) segments are forecast to show growth in value.

International travel to Australia is forecast to increase 5.5% (or 308,000 to 5.9 million
visits), following the already solid 3.5% growth so far this year (January-April).
Australia’s robust economic performance (and the increasing propensity for Australians
to travel overseas) will encourage further growth in international aviation capacity
servicing Australia.

Arrivals from all major inbound markets are forecast to increase in 2010, with most
growth (in terms of trips) coming from the US (up 9% or 42,000), China (up 9% or
34,000) and New Zealand (up 3% or 30,000). The markets showing the strongest growth
this year in percentage terms are the Middle East (up 20%) and Indonesia (up 19%).

The Chair of the TFC, Mr Bernard Salt said, “Tourism will clearly benefit from the
stronger economic backdrop this year compared with the terrible conditions last year.
The recent fall in the dollar will also make international leisure travel to Australia
cheaper, while the global economic recovery should boost business travel.”

The TFC also notes that the recent concerns over Australia’s international education
segment have not yet translated into less education visitors. While we have seen a fall
from some markets, notably the United States and India, education visitors to Australia
have risen 7% so far this year, fuelled by strong growth from China, our largest
education market.

2
An improved outlook is also forecast for the domestic tourism sector, with domestic
visitor nights in Australia forecast to increase 1.5% this year, after sharp falls in recent
years. Mr Salt said, “a weaker Australian dollar combined with growth in jobs and
discretionary spending will benefit the sector this year and next”.

Growth in outbound travel continues to be strong, with a record number of Australians

leaving our shores in 2009 (up 8%) and so far in 2010 (January-April 2010, up 18%),
featuring solid growth to nearby destinations: New Zealand, Indonesia and Malaysia.
The combination of heavily discounted airfares and a strong Australian dollar—which
fuelled growth late last year—will become less favourable over the course of 2010.
Growth in Australian outbound travel is forecast to slow to a still very strong 13% this
year.

Mr Salt cautioned that, “the modest optimism in these forecasts is based on the
somewhat patchy global economic recovery gathering momentum over the course of this
year. However, a return to global recessionary conditions, possibly stemming from the
sovereign debt concerns in Europe, would reduce discretionary spending on
consumables like tourism. Managing these risks highlights the need for Australian
governments and the tourism industry to work together to improve the competitive
footing and resilience of this key sector.”

1.2 Segmentation, Target market & Positioning of Australian

1.2.1 The segments

Tourism Australia’s target market - Experience Seekers - can be found among all age
groups, income levels, and geographic locations. To assist with our global
marketing efforts, Tourism Australia takes a segmented approach, allowing our
messages to be appropriately targeted to various life stages and mind sets. In each
segment, there is an emphasis on attracting first time visitors.

The Youth Segment

Tourism Australia is involved in a number of marketing initiatives around the

world that specifically target the youth segment and working holiday visa
makers. This segment is made up of people aged between 18 and 30 years,
commonly referred to as Generation Y. Experience Seekers in this segment look
to develop confidence and life skills through travel and the sense of achievement
this derives.

Tourism Australia provides youth specific content on Australia.com. This

content 'Australia for the youth (full) traveler' invites youth travelers to join the
droves of young people who choose Australia to fulfill their dream of a gap
year, career break, working holiday or overseas study.

The Family Segment

The age group of this segment varies greatly and is made up of couples with
children. When planning their holiday, this price conscious segment, look for
destinations offering accessibility, safety and value. Our research shows that
families are most interested in Australia’s welcoming, immersion and nature
brand messages.

 The Holidaymaker Segment

2
Holidaymakers are more likely to be couples and are unlikely to have dependent
children. They are driven by a desire to experience diversity and different
cultures. Australia’s brand messages of adventure, immersion, welcoming and
nature resonate well with this group. In each of Tourism Australia’s markets
around the world, this segment will be refined and the best demographic
targeted.

The Honeymoon Segment

This segment is found in some of the Eastern markets and also France and Italy.
Tourism Australia’s activities in these markets target experience seekers
generally aged 25 to 39, to visit Australia for their honeymoon, or wedding.

This segment can also include couples coming to Australia for a luxury
experience. Luxury travel in Australia is not simply about five star hotels. The
real luxury is about what happens outside your room. It’s the unique experiences
you have by day before relaxing in sumptuous comfort at night.

1.2.2 Target Market

 The Experience Seeker

A core element of Tourism Australia’s strategy is to target a high yielding

consumer segment. Tourism Australia has identified common segments across
different cultures that would be receptive to the Australian experience and called
them the Experience Seeker. This target market is highly predisposed to
Australia’s offer and is more likely to stay longer, spend more and disperse to
regional areas.

Experience Seekers are, by definition, looking for unique, involving and

personal experiences from their holidays. Using psychographic research, studies
find how travelers think and feel to determine the personal factors that influence
them to travel. Experience Seekers are long haul travelers who are less affected
2
by the traditional barriers to travel of distance, time and cost. They are more
informed, interested and curious about potential travel destinations. They
constitute around 30 to 50 per cent of all potential long haul outbound travelers
from our key source markets. Experience Seekers can be found among all age
groups, income levels and geographic locations.

 Research has shown that the Experience Seeker has a number of key
‘wants’ to satisfy their travel experience:

• Authentic personal experiences;

• Social interactions;
• Meeting and interacting with the locals;
• Experiencing something different from their normal day-to-day life;
• Understanding and learning about different lifestyles and cultures;
• Participating in the lifestyle and experiencing it, rather than observing it;
• Challenging themselves – physically, emotionally and/or mentally;
• Visiting authentic destinations that are not necessarily part of the tourist
route; and
• Exposure to unique and compelling experiences.

 Typically Experience Seekers are more likely to be:

• Experienced international travelers;

• Opinion leaders;
• Open minded; and
• Selective in their media consumption.

 Other features of Experience Seekers are:

• Travel is an important part of their lifestyle;

• They stay longer and spend more;
• They travel beyond the major cities;
• They are less materialistic;
• They have a higher than average household income; and

2
• They are well educated and informed on a range of subjects.

1.2.3 Positioning

For over 40 years Tourism Australia has been promoting Australia to the world and over
those years we've learned a lot about what is unique and special about country.
Australian tourism brand is one building block within the broader Brand Australia
concept.

• Brand positioning statement provides the guide for our brand

communications strategy. It outlines the strengths and associations that make
our brand not only different but also meaningful.

“The people of Australia are friendly and straight talking and open. Their
sense of mate ship and their no worries attitude make all visitors feel
welcome. They make it easy to enjoy adventures beyond imagination.
Whether it’s in Australia’s wide-open landscapes, pristine oceans or vibrant
cities a holiday in Australia are an opportunity to experience a vast yet
accessible adventure playground. You don’t just visit Australia, you live it.”

Tourism Australia's five key brand messages

• Transformation
A holiday to Australia would give me a fresh perspective.

Australia is a place that changes you. You arrive with all the stresses and
pressures of modern day life, but while you’re here, the land and the locals
very quickly begin to wash away all those unwanted feelings and leave you
feeling uplifted, energized and reconnected with your friends or family.

• Immersion
Holidays in Australia are about participating in life, not observing it.

Getting involved is a way of life in Australia. We don’t sit back and watch
things pass us by. That’s why holiday experiences here create such amazing
memories. You’ll leave with stories that will last a lifetime, about how Steve

2
the lifesaver taught you to surf your first wave on Bondi Beach or Bill the
winemaker let you pick grapes in his vineyard in the Barossa.

• Adventure
Australia is an adventure holiday destination

Spend some time here and it won’t take you long to realise that Australia is
an ‘outdoors’ country. Whether you want to hike through the Kimberley or
learn to surf on the Gold Coast, Australia offers an activity for everyone. The
vastness of the land offers different kinds of adventures everywhere you turn,
and it’s the kind of place that encourages you go ‘give it a go’.

• Nature
Australia offers involving experiences in the natural environment

It is a vast land, full of stunning natural landscapes and some of the most
unique and friendly forms of wildlife on the planet. Whether it be the
remoteness of outback Australia, the pristine waters of the Sunshine Coast or
the amazing wildlife of the Kakadu National Park, it won’t take long to clear
the mind of the hustle and bustle of modern day city life.

• Welcoming
Australia is a welcoming holiday destination

Australian people are some of the friendliest people on earth. From the
moment you arrive, it doesn’t take long to feel like you belong here. Mate
ship is what we’re famous for and no matter where you go or what you do
