Smoking
Smoking is especially unhealthy for young people because it produces adverse effect on the blood.
The red blood corpuscles of young persons are not yet fully developed. They are not yet fully charged with
their normal supply of oxygen. This is why young boys who smoke are pale. Palpitation of the heart
commonly results from this lack of oxygen. This may be followed by permanent weakness. The whole
system may be enfeebled and mental as well as physical vigor impaired. Most teachers can tell who among
their students are addicted to smoking merely by their appearance. This addiction is also evident in their
intellectual and bodily indolence. The evil effects of tobacco are not so evident in mature people. But
competent physicians assert that tobacco cannot be safely used by anyone.
