Present Condition

There has been a growing interest among policymakers about the relevance of rail-based systems in
India, to address the mobility needs of the expanding population. This mode shift is then claimed to
result in reduced air pollution and accidents. The Indian Railways received the highest ever budgetary
allocation under Union Budget 2018-19 at Rs 1.48 trillion (US$ 22.86 billion). Out of this allocation,
Rs 1.46 trillion (US$ 22.55 billion) is capital expenditure that will be used for capacity creation and
redevelopment of 600 railway stations. (INFRASTRUCTURE, 2019, India Brand Equity
Foundation). Again, to obtain latest technical knowledge about world Railways, Ministry of Railways
have signed Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) for technical cooperation with various foreign
countries/railways which inter alia includes modernization of rail infrastructure including railway
stations (Modernization of Indian Railways, 2016, Press Information Bureau, Ministry of Railways,
Government of India).

c. Drainage design
d. Connecting road planning
e. Design of yard alignment
f. Architectural Planning
g. Preparation of BOQ and Rate analysis.

2. Skill Requirement

 Technical Knowledge: As a part of current project assignment we are gaining knowledge in Yard
planning, Detailed Design of Yard and other components, Bill of Quantities, Rate analysis of
various items of Yard. During finalization of above-mentioned works issue arises regarding
fixation of various dimensions of Railway which need to be referred from PWAY manual. An
expert review on finalized work may fulfil the requirement of transfer and gaining of technical
knowledge in case of Yard design prospective. Again, hydrology plays a huge role while working
on hill alignment. Currently we are doing hydrological work with the help of analytic software
(HEC-RAS). However, an expert personnel in Hydrology may fulfil the requirement.
 Software Knowledge: Currently we are using Bentley Rail Track, which is said to be a leading
software for rail track design. However, we are not very much confident regarding in depth
knowledge related to this software because of the effectively zero problem solving support as we
are very beginner on this software operation platform. Again, software and technical guidance are
also required for hydrological data analysis and use of design software HEC-RAS.
Now, for a smoothen work process (a) a software training programme related to Rail based
software will be very much helpful along with (b) a constant guidance to improve technical skill
to deal with railway projects will be required.
Again, from architectural point of view, the following software assistance will be required:
a. Sketchup: Applicable for conceptual design. The main advantage of this software is it is time
saving and easy to work.
b. Photoshop: Applicable for rendering purpose. The main advantage of this software is it is
light software, time saving and user friendly.
