Personal Protective Equipment Management

1.0 Scope:
This SOP and its related guidelines & safe work instructions are applicable to _______.

2.0 Purpose:
This procedure provides the requirements defining safe work practices related to Personal
Protective Equipment.

3.0 Responsibility:
3.1 All employees: It is responsibility of all employees to follow this SOP and its related
work instructions.
3.2 HoDs: All HoDs shall ensure their respective team members follow these safe system of
work.
3.3 HSE: Ensure all staff is well versed with these SOPs, guidelines and safe work
instructions.

4.0 Definitions:
4.1 PPE: Personal Protective Equipment:
Those equipment which are used to protect the employees from the hazards associated with
their jobs where engineering & management controls are inadequate to protect them.

5.0 Procedure
5.1 General
 The need to provide PPE shall be determined from the process of Hazard Identification
and Risk Assessment (HIRA) and development of risk control.
 PPE of approved quality and in adequate quantity shall be provided.
 Consideration shall be given to the need for protecting persons who are working nearby
or passing close to hazardous areas.
 Line management should monitor compliance with requirements to use PPE by
individual(s), including staff, workers, visitors and contractors.

5.2 Risk Based PPE Regime


 Mandatory PPE regime is established after careful study of risks associated with
potentially hazardous operations, work areas, process flow and equipment in use
 Work Situations/Circumstances in which PPE may be required to be worn include;
o Head Protection in the form of a safety helmet shall be worn where, there is a
possibility that a person may be struck on the head by a falling object, a person may
strike his head against a fixed object, working at height or there may be inadvertent
head contact with electrical hazards.

o Eye and Face protection shall be provided where a risk of eye injury exists. Typical
hazards might include flying particles, dust, splashing chemicals, harmful gases,
vapours, aerosols, electrical work and high intensity radiation from welding
operations.
o Hearing Protection shall be provided where a risk of noise induced hearing loss
exists. The need for hearing protection shall be assessed from the results of noise
level surveys carried out in potentially high noise areas.
o Respiratory Protection shall be provided, after all other practicable measures have
been taken to provide control measures, to ensure that no employee / operator is
exposed to an atmosphere (airborne contaminants) that is or may be injurious to
health.
o Dust Mask shall be provided where a risk of airborne dust/fiber exist to restrict the
particles/ hazardous substance entering the respiratory track.
o Hand Protection shall be provided where there is an identified hazard associated
with a potential for hand injury such as hot work, electrical work, lifting heavy
equipment, chemical handling etc…
o Protective Footwear and Uniform (safety footwear) shall be provided where the
nature of the work exposes the employee to a medium to high risk of injury to feet,
e.g. occupations such as construction work, workshops and maintenance staff and
all field and operations staff!
o Fall Protection shall be used whenever working at height above 7 feet. Full body
harness is recommended and use of safety belts is discouraged.

5.3 Selection of PPE


 The need to provide PPE shall be determined from the process of Hazard Identification
and Risk Assessment (HIRA) and development of risk control.
 The selection of PPE should be made in line with the type and nature of hazard with one
could expose and associated risk.
 Only PPE of approved quality should be selected.
 The quantity of PPE is selected such that each person has his own unit of PPE, sharing
of PPE is not allowed in risky areas.

5.4 Maintenance of PPE


 All PPE is to be used, maintained and stored in accordance with instructions from the
manufacture/ supplier.
 Staff issued with PPE should take proper care and maintain proper sanitation of their
PPE.

5.5 Replacement of PPE


 Line Managers with supervisory responsibilities are to regulary inspect their PPE and
order replacements as required;

o Any damage which compromise the effectiveness of any specific PPE;


o If item is lost; or
o If any particular PPE has a specific use-by-date, it should be replaced prior to that
date.
 Staff member should notify their HOD in writing of their requirement for replacement
as noted above. If an item is damaged, the item requiring replacement should be
presented to their HOD.
o The order of replacement is the sole descrition of the HOD.

5.6 Training
 All staff required to wear PPE shall be provided with training prior to use and ongoing
training where necessary.

5.7 PPE Signage/Visual Controls


All hazardous areas at all the Company operations site requiring use of PPE should
be adeuqately posted with informative/warning safety signs such as wear risk based
PPEs, such as ear muffs/plugs, respirator, helmet, gloves etc
