Sugarcane Internode Section Total Soluble Solids (TSS), °Brix

Mature 20
Immature 8

Implications of the measured value:

According to an article, Brix percentage is a measure of the sucrose or sugar content where
one degree Brix is equal to one gram of sucrose in 100 grams of solution.
Typically, Brix is determined by refractive index. When dissolved solids such as sugar
increase, the refractive index increases. This allows us to use refractometers to measure a variety
of different compounds. Refractometers work particularly well on sugarcane since virtually all of
the dissolved solids in the juice are sucrose. Two different types of sugarcane were used which can
vary greatly in their sucrose levels; whereas mature sugarcane has 20% Brix while immature is
only 8%. Based on the data gathered, it can be concluded that the mature sugarcane is considered
to produce the highest quality of cane sugar compared to the immature one.
