MSCE 514 Prestressed Concrete

Problem Set 1

1. A pre tensioned concrete member has a rectangular section 203 mm x 305 mm. It is
concentrically prestressed with 516 sq mm of high tensile wire, which is anchored to the
bulkheads at a unit stress of 1034 MPa. Compute the stresses in concrete immediately after
prestressing. The beam is supported throughout its length.
2. What would be the stresses in the beam in #1 if the center of the prestressing wire was 100 mm
above the bottom of the beam?
3. A rectangular section prestressed concrete beam is 228 mm x 635 mm. It is stressed by 75 wires
5 mm in diameter having an eccentricity of 200 mm. The final prestress of the wire is 655 MPa. If
maximum moment due to LL and DL is 305 KN-m, find the stresses in the concrete.
4. A post tensioned concrete T beam has a flange width of 508 mm and is 76 mm thick. The web is
127 mm wide and 533 mm deep below the flange. The prestressing cable 968 sq mm is 101 mm
above bottom of web. Initial prestress is 1034 MPa. The beam is 9.1 m long on a simple span
and is to carry a load of 11.67 KN/m. If prestressing losses amount to 15%, check the stresses at
transfer and at working.
