CHAPTER 2

METHOD

This chapter presents the method of research, population, sample, sampling, technique, research

instrument, data-gathering procedure and the statistical treatment of data.

Research Design

This study is a quantitative research. It seeks to understand the existing condition of

factors associated with the improvement of oral communication skills of Education students

major in English. This study emphasizes objective measurements and the statistical,

mathematical or numerical analysis of the gathered data.

The researchers use the descriptive method. The descriptive method collects the

quantifiable information to be used for statistical analysis of the population sample.

Population, Sample, Sampling Techniques

The researchers’ target population for this research defines to include the students of

Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English in Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina. The

researchers will limit their sample to a total of 100 students of the said college. The Proportional

Stratified Random Sampling is used in this study.

a) 1st year BSED (1EDENG1C) - 48

b) 2nd year BSED (2EDENG4A) - 19

c) 3rd year BSED (3EDENG6A) - 33

Where:

S = stratified random sampling result

N = total population of First Year English Major

Pn = number of students per section

n = desired number of population

Research Instrument

To gather information from the respondents, the researchers will use the survey

questionnaire. The survey aims to gather students’ level of fluency, accuracy in speaking English

language, level of comprehension and performance, and the factors affecting the development of

oral communication skills.

The questionnaire will contain 20 questions which the students will rate themselves. The

researchers used the questionnaire to rate the oral communication skills of English major

students. The questionnaire test measures largely of how confident the English majors are when

it comes in communicating.
Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers collected the data by means of survey questionnaire that comprises the

students’ fluency and accuracy in oral communication skills. The researchers will produce 100

copies of the said questionnaire and conduct it to each BSED Major in English students of

Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina. After the respondents have taken the tests, the paper will

be checked, tallied, interpreted and analyzed.

Permission from the Dean will be asked by the researchers. If permitted, the researchers

will push through with the survey. The researchers will ask the professor present in the

classroom of the BSED major in English students to conduct a survey in his or her class. 48

students were need from 1EDENG1C, 19 from 2EDENG4A and 33 from 3EDENG6A.

The researcher will conduct the survey in the month of September 2019.
Statistical Treatment of Data

In determining the degree of relationship between the factors that affecting the fluency

and accuracy of English oral communication, the researchers will use the Pearson correlation

coefficient and T-test for significance. The formulas to be used are:

N (∑xy) – (∑x) (∑y)

r=
√[𝑁(∑𝑥 2 ) – (∑x)²] [𝑁(∑𝑦 2 ) − (∑𝑦)²]

Where:

r = pearson’s correlation coefficient

N = total number of respondents

x = weighted means of one factor

y = scores of questionnaire survey
