Should pupils be able to listen to music whilst studying in class?

Do you listen to music while you’re studying? Whether you’re studying for an important
test, or when you’re doing your homework, I bet music would be turned on, accompanying you
as you study. As a student, music is a pretty vital essential for studying. It helps me focus better
and improves the grades I earn at school. Therefore, pupils should be able to listen to music
whilst studying in class because music that is soothing and relaxing can ease anxiety and beat
stress while studying, music help us block out surrounding noise that may distract students,
music triggers the release of dopamine in our brains which promotes feelings of happiness that
improves the student’s mood. Despite the advantages, the disadvantage would be that music
might distract the student’s concentration instead of increasing their concentration.

Firstly, music that is soothing and relaxing can ease anxiety and beat stress while
studying. Research that has been conducted by the UMD Medical Center have shown that
listening to soothing music can decrease blood pressure, heart rate, and anxiety levels. Even
without the scientific research, I think that many people know for a fact that calm music could
help in concentration whilst studying since many geniuses in movies are often found listening to
calm music while studying.

Secondly, music helps us block out surrounding noise that may distract students. By
doing so, students are able to concentrate on their designated tasks and not be bothered by
other noise. This will increase students’ productivity levels as their minds are only occupied with
music and their studies. Personally, listening to music has helped me focus during study
sessions, gradually increasing my own productivity.

Thirdly, music triggers the release of dopamine in our brains which promotes feelings of
happiness that improves the student’s mood. By improving the student’s mood, students are
able to study more efficiently as music has reduced students’ anxiety. Studies have found that
students are better at solving problems when they are in a positive mood compared to a neutral
or negative mood. Research has also found that our cortisol levels decreases while listening to
music (cortisol is a hormone that is responsible for feelings of anxiety and stress). Lastly, good
mood caused by listening to music helps students endure long periods of studying.

One could argue that listening to music might distract the student’s concentration,
causing them to not study effectively. The only logical answer to this claim is that all students
are different. Some may find music helpful during their studies, and vice versa. The important
thing to remember is that researchers have found calm music to help in increasing
concentration during studying, whilst other type of music are proven to not be as effective, or
not effective at all.

In conclusion, pupils should be able to listen to music whilst studying in class because
music that is soothing and relaxing can ease anxiety and beat stress while studying, music help
us block out surrounding noise that may distract students, music triggers the release of
dopamine in our brains which promotes feelings of happiness that improves the student’s
mood, but also that music might distract the student’s concentration instead of increasing their
concentration. Remember, all students are different.
