ACTIVITY 1

1. How does globalization influence English language learning?

Due to globalization the spread and interconnectedness of English language is

becoming increasingly widespread across the world. English is commonly used in
education as a medium of instruction in higher level. Learners in different countries
are learning and wanted to learn English in order for them to have access to
communicate with others around the world. It is also the number one language that
is used in applying a job. English has negatively influenced native languages, but the
focus of learning English is to acquire opportunities that are not available without
knowledge of the English language. That is why we need to be proficient speakers of
English in order for us to become a competent individuals in these changing
environment, with the fact that English is an international language of trade and
industry, means that more and more people are learning English as a way of
surviving in today's world. But we should always and still keep in touch to our native
languages for us to be connected with our heritage.

2. How do sociocultural factors affect English language learning?

Socio-cultural factors were taken great considerations in the process of learning. Not
only is the individual’s identity taken into account but also the environment in which
the individual gathered his or her experiences. Being a foreign language learner is
challenging enough as it is, but it can become really difficult if certain sociocultural
factors are in place. Sociocultural variables are factors relating to customs, behaviors
and belief systems that a group of people follow such as discrimination, stereotype
and communication with native speakers. Because of these factors the confidence
of a learner to speak English language is affected. His or her proficiency and fluency
in speaking cannot be exercise.
Language learning is not all about learning the lexicon and the grammar of a specific
language. It encompasses many other factors such as how knowledge of the
language is transferred and how communication and interaction affect the process of
language learning. In order to be a successful and proficient language learner, the
person needs to make use of all his/her cognitive and social skills to master the
language.
3. How does the concept of communicative competence relate to English language
learning?

A central concept of the communicative approach to language teaching is

communicative competence. In learning English language we should have first the
ability to understand and use the language appropriately to communicate in authentic
social and school environments. We should know the proper use of grammar rules,
meaning and the structure of the sentence to be able for us to have effective
communication and understanding towards others. A communicative competent
individual should build a connection to everyone and exercise awareness such as
formality, politeness and the manner of speaking the English language. The concept
of communicative competence is the process to develop our skills in learning English
language, to familiarize the rules of language and to achieve the conversational
fluency.

4. Could learning styles be affected by culture? If so, how?

Cultural education provides insight to the relationship between cultural

backgrounds and language learning; awareness of cultural impacts on
English language learning can influence classroom decisions and lead to an
increase in positive learning outcomes. We are colonized by other countries and
as time passes by we also adapted their cultures. The world is changing that is why
we need also to change and develop our learning styles and strategies to be able for
us to cope up with the challenges in the society. The teaching styles, strategies and
techniques of teachers in teaching is also chanced, technologies and different
instructional materials are also added. They enable the learner to deal more
effectively and independently with new language learning challenges, to see what
options exist and to make better use of opportunities. So we need to enhance more
our learning style for us to learn.

ACTIVITY 2
1. Explain how learning styles affect second language acquisition.

Learning styles refer to the variations in how an individual learn based on their
preferences, strengths, and weaknesses. Style is usually described as a
personality dimension which influences attitude and social interaction. Learning
styles affect second language acquisition by means of using the styles that he/she
wanted to use in learning the language. In learning the second language it will
be easy for a learner to acquire the language that she/he wanted to learn because
of the style to process information and the mode of thinking or remembering the
language.

2. Explain how learning strategies affect second language acquisition.

Strategies in language learning, or the steps that one take to learn a language, is
very important in ultimate language performance. Learning strategies may affect
the second language acquisition by inserting more ways of strategic learning
styles. Strategies may help the learner to acquire the language and interact with
others with the fluency and proficiency in speaking. Having a critical thinking,
studying and concentration of the memory will help us to become a native speaker
of a second language. Making as a habit is the best strategy.

3. Explain how differences in personality type relate to second language acquisition.

Personality refers to individual differences in characteristic patterns of thinking,

feeling and behaving. There are two types of personality, extroverts (or
unreserved and outgoing people) and introverts (or shy people). Extrovert acquire
a second language better than introvert.
An extrovert is a friendly person who enjoys talking to and being with other people
that is why she/he is more attracted to learn second language while introvert is
the reverse personality of extrovert preferred to be alone. Improving the
personality can help you to learn second language better.

4. Explain how motivation helps in second language acquisition.

Motivation is an inner drive that causes you to do something. When you are
motivated to do something, it is enough to start working for something that we are
attracted. Same thing with second language acquisition, if we are motivated to
learn a second language we never stop making things just to learn it. Our
attraction towards that language drives us to persist working on it until we master
the language. Our motivation helps us to strengthen our knowledge and to reach
our goals. A learner who is highly motivated to learn enjoys learning and learns
much.
