I like subscribing to things with a clear vision and a noble mission.

I believe myself to be a person

awkwardly stumbling through life, trying to figure out what it is I can do with the time I have been given
here on earth, and so any sort of clarity from other people is a much appreciated break from the clutter
that is my current state of being. I try my best to seek direction from the Church, my family, the social
organizations I am a part of, and of course, my work. So far, I haven’t been doing that bad. I have a Church
that engages me and brings me closer to God, a family that supports me and counsels me on the decisions
I make, social organizations that involve me and fulfill my desire to be of service to others, and thankfully,
work that not only compensates me, but also provides me with opportunity to be part of a community far
greater than my own. In the Transnational Diversified Group (TDG), I feel empowered and inspired to
make good on its vision… albeit the methodology is still, like me, quite in need of some momentum.

TDG is a wholly Filipino-owned and Philippine-based conglomerate involved the industries of Total
Logistics, Total Ship Management, Travel and Tourism, Information and Communications Technology, and
Investments. We currently have more than 40 member companies under our belt, and counting.

Established in 1976 by Jose Roberto C. Delgado, a Filipino entrepreneur and philanthropist, and the late
Mr. Kiyoshi Osawa, a Japanese businessman, as Fil-Japan Shipping Corporation, TDG grew from its original
16 employees, to 18,000 land and sea-based employees today.

Our mission is to become a partner and employer of choice. Our vision is to be Global, Great, and Green.
But, more importantly, in TDG, we have a strong sense of identity – we are a company with a heart. And
truly true to its word, TDG makes every extra effort to make all our stakeholders feel that they are
important. We have a world-class maritime academy in Canlubang, Laguna, called the NYK-TDG Maritime
Academy, which has a Study Now, Pay Later program that allows poor but deserving cadets to pursue a
maritime education without the pressure of thinking about where to get the next payment for their tuition
fee. We have Employee Engagement activities such as the annual founding anniversary, TDG Day, where
we generously reward our loyal employees, outstanding seafarers, employees of the year, and even the
exceptional children and dependents of our employees who excel in their academics. We also have a
property in Silang, Cavite that has been converted from being an idle asset to becoming an organic farming
facility, Kai Farms. Most importantly, as a commitment to corporate social responsibility, TDG adopted
the CSR perspective as part of its balance scorecard, as well as long established the NYK-TDG Friendship
Foundation (NTFF), a donee and grant-making institution, capable of transferring donations from donors
to entities in need or worthy causes aligned with the organization’s mission and vision, with its partner of
more than 40 years, NYK Line of Japan. I would say, on the Corporate Social Responsibility Continuum, we
rate pretty high up, being able to integrate our perceived social responsibility to our communities and our
business goals and expertise.

The challenge though is transitioning from an organization that is merely able to balance its CSR with the
conduct of its business, to becoming a company that is a leader in the creation of a better world. Currently,
while top management is ready to lead TDG to becoming a leader in CSR, many employees have yet to
buy-in to this same idea. We may be a company with a heart, but right now, there are simply too many
hearts all beating at the same time. There only needs to be one.

While all noble causes, TDG’s corporate social responsibility has still a long way to go before it is able to
fulfill the company’s vision. What is needed is a complete awareness of, affinity for, and total
accountability of the CSR initiatives of the organization by each and every TDGer.
Here’s what I propose:

First, we, once and for all, empower NTFF to become the CSR arm of TDG. Becoming no longer just a done
institution, NTFF can become expert in organizing TDG’s CSR initiatives, as well as develop and enforce a
culture for service amongst TDGers. This way, there is focus and streamlining for TDG’s CSR activities.

Next, we imbibe in our employees a love for service and CSR the TDG way by requiring every member
company to adopt a parcel of land from Kai Farms which its employees must learn how to tend to at least
once every month. As compensation for the time they spend in the farm, we may allow the employees to
offset their time spent doing farm work with a regular work day. Not only is this an employee engagement
activity, it is also an opportunity to allow our employees to have more accountability and love for the work
they have done in the farm, hopefully allowing them to carry on this fulfillment in their own homes.

And finally, we connect the dots. Being that we have more than 40 member companies all involved in
different industries and in various points on a supply chain, we can use every resource we have to bring a
product of public service to the general public. We have organic produce from Kai Farms that can be
shipped to interested buyers such as restaurants, airlines, or even shipping vessels. Land transportation
can be delivered by containers and trucks operated by our Logistics Division. Our Travel and Tourism and
Ship Management Divisions may transport these produce to various air and sea ports. And our ICT Division
can make it easy and possible to order our products, and connect us from farm, to transport, to table.
Making use of the entire of the entire supply chain available to us, we not only generate economic activity
for the company and the country, but also are able to take one step closer to fulfilling TDG’s vision of
becoming a leader in all aspects of Global, Great, and Green.

TDG is a company I see myself growing old in because here I feel like I have a bigger purpose than just to
serve myself. My only hope is that I am able to become part of the proliferation of this same vision, so
that other people, my fellow TDGers, can likewise find their own place in this company with a heart.
