1. Abstract

A coupling is a device used to connect two shafts together at their ends for the
purpose of transmitting power. The primary purpose of couplings is to join two
pieces of rotating equipment while permitting some degree of misalignment or
end movement or both. In a more general context, a coupling can also be a
mechanical device that serves to connect the ends of adjacent parts or objects.
The main purpose of a coupling is to reduce the losses, angler deflections of
the shafts and to transmit the maximum power from one shaft to another.
Shaft couplings are mainly two types, that is rigid coupling and Flexible
couplings. Rigid coupling won’t allow the lateral misalignment of shafts but
flexible couplings permits both lateral and angular misalignment. Muf
couplings are rigid couplings which are used to connect two shafts of same
diameter to transmit the power. These are again classified into two types i.e.
Sleeve/muf/Box coupling and Split muf/compression coupling.

Split-Muf coupling is one of the major type of coupling. In this, the muf is split
into two halves and are recessed. A number of bolts and nuts are used to
connect the muf halves and the recesses provided accommodate the bolt
heads and nuts. . Based on the usage of the coupling a keyway is made in the
bore in order to transmit the torque by means of the key. Two threaded holes
are provided in order to lock the coupling in position. Muf coupling is generally
manufactured by Cast iron and used to connect two shafts solid or hallow.
Shaft and sleeve are positioned with help of Key
2. Introduction
The primary purpose of couplings is to join two pieces of rotating equipment
while permitting some degree of misalignment or end movement or both. In a
more general context, a coupling can also be a mechanical device that serves to
connect the ends of adjacent parts or objects. Couplings do not normally allow
disconnection of shafts during operation, however there are torque
limiting couplings which can slip or disconnect when some torque limit is
exceeded. Selection, installation and maintenance of couplings can lead to
reduced maintenance time and maintenance cost.

It is mainly used as industrial machinery to alter the vibration characteristics of

rotating units in automobile or any working machinery also helps in connecting
driving and the driven part. To introduce protection against overloads to
provide for the connection of shafts of units that are manufactured separately
(such as a motor and generator) and to provide for disconnection for repairs or
alterations To provide for misalignment of the shafts To introduce mechanical
flexibility in any type such as small scale or large scale of use. To reduce the
transmission of shock loads from one shaft to another. To slip when overload
occurs.

PARTS OF COMPONENT:

 Muffs
 Shaft
 Key
 Bolts

Muffs: - The sleeve is manufactured keeping the diameter of shaft

in mind so that the shaft fi ts perfectly into the sleeve. The driver &
driven, both the shaft s are then inserted into each side of the sleeve.
Also two or more threaded holes are provided into the sleeve as well
as in both of the shaft ’s end so that they don’t move in longitudinal
directi on when the bolts are inserted into them. Also the keyway and
key ensures that the shaft and sleeve doesn’t slip. The sleeve coupling
is easy to manufacture as there are neither more nor more number of
parts.
They are used where the shaft s don’t require any alignments and load
capacity is light to medium duty.

Keys: - A key is a machine element used to connect a rotating machine

element to a shaft. The key prevents relative rotation between the two parts
and may enable torque transmission. For a key to function, the shaft and
rotating machine element must have a keyway and a key seat, which is a slot
and pocket in which the key fits. The whole system is called a keyed joint. A
keyed joint may allow relative axial movement between the parts. Commonly
keyed components include gears, pulleys, couplings, and washers.

Shaft: -A shaft is a rotating machine element, usually circular in cross

section, which is used to transmit power from one part to another, or from a
machine which produces power to a machine which absorbs power.

USES AND REAL TIME APPLICATION OF COMPONENT

 To alter the vibration characteristics of rotating units

 To connect driving and the driven part.

 To introduce protection against overloads.

 To provide for the connection of shafts of units that are

manufactured separately (such as a motor and generator) and to
provide for disconnection for repairs or alterations.

 To provide for misalignment of the shafts.

3. Procedure
By using solid works we done this modelling of Split Muf Coupling

PART 1- Muf
1. File  New  Part Design  Save As  muff
2. First select the plane of top view plane and select the sketch option
3. Draw the shape as given in the figure as per the dimensions using circle,
line and trim options.

4. Extrude the shape by using extrude option and by required dimensions

5. Create 2 planes as shown in the figure as shown image for remove the
portion for bolts.

6. Draw the shape which we want to remove as per dimensions as shown.

7. Select cut extrude option and remove this part as per dimension.

8. Repeat this on both sides and also in plane 2.

9. Select sketch on base of the part and draw circle with dimension same as
the bolts diameter on 4 sides as given in figure and remove the part
using cut extrude option to get the down muf which doesn’t require key
hole.
10.File-Save.
11.Select the front plane and select sketch and draw a rectangle in the
dimension of key in as per the dimension as shown in diagram and
remove the part using extrude cut to get the top muf.

12.File –Save as – Top Muf.

PART 2 -Key
1. Select the front plane and select sketch.
2. Draw a rectangle for key as per the dimensions and extrude it as given to get
the key.

3. File-Save as-Key

PART 3 –Shaft
1. Select the front plane and select sketch.
2. Draw a circle as per the dimensions and extrude it as required.
3. Select the front plane and sketch a rectangle as shown in the figure and
remove the rectangle to get the key hole to lock the muf and shaft.
4. File-Save as-Shaft.

Assembly
Step 1-File-new-Assembly
Step 2-insert the top muf and down muf using insert component option.
Step 3-mate top muf and down muf coaxially and lock it.
Step 4-insert the shafts and arrange it coaxially with mufs .
Step 5-Arrange the key in the key hole with its axis parallel to axis of split muf
and coincident with shaft and muf face.
Step 6-insert the bolts in the space which is provided by arranging it with
coaxially with the axis of the hole.
Step 7-arrange the nut using the same procedure upto the face of muf to get
the split muf coupling.
4.RESULTS&CONCLUSION

Hence, we done the designing and modelling of split muf coupling

Finally we assembled and modelled split muf coupling used for machinery
purpose.
