CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Today, it is crucial to determine the impact of social media on the academic performance

of students. Technology is booming rapidly from year to year, and the younger generations are the

ones caught in this rapid change. (Hashem, 2015)

Social media is computer-based technology that facilitates the sharing of ideas, thoughts,

and information through the building of virtual networks and communities. By design, social

media is internet-based and gives users quick electronic communication of content. Content

includes personal information, documents, videos, and photos. Users engage with social media via

computer, tablet or smartphone via web-based software or web application, often utilizing it for

messaging. (Dollarhide, 2019)

Jennifer Walsh, lead author of the study, which was published in the journal Emerging

Adulthood, wrote that students who spent the most time using social media had “fewer academic

behaviors, such as completing homework and attending class, lower academic confidence and

more problems affecting their school work, like lack of sleep and substance use.” A new study

released by researchers at The Miriam Hospital’s Centers for Behavioral and Preventive

Medicine shows a link between social media use and poor academic performance. The study

wasn’t limited to usage of traditional social media outlets like Twitter and Facebook, but instead

included popular social technology like texting. Freshman women spend upwards of 12 hours a

day using some form of social media, researchers found. Social networking and watching movies
and TV were most negatively associated with academic performance among the study

participants.(Carter, 2013)

Statement of the Problem

This study generally aims to determine if a Senior High School students use of social media

affect their academic performance

Specifically, this study shall seek answers to the following questions:

1. What is the Demographic Profile of the respondents in terms of:

a. Sex;

b. Strand and

c. Grade Level?

2. What is the level of social media usage of Senior High School students of Nagbalayong

National High School in terms of:

a. Frequency of social media use and

b. Mode of social media use?

3. Is there a significant relationship between the frequencies of social media use in the

Academic performances of the students?

Significance of the Study

This study will hopefully give better insights to the following:

Students. The study will benefit the students because they will be aware that social media

is one of the factors affecting their performance in class.

Teachers. The study will also benefit the teachers because they will be informed that social

media can affect the learning of the students, so they could do something to solve this problem.

Parents. The study will also benefit the parents because they will be informed that social

media has advantages about their child and they could provide help to the teachers in dealing with

and managing their children.

Future researchers. The study will also benefit other researchers because they can use it

for further study in the future

Scope and Delimitations of the Study

This study is correlational research focusing on the impact of social media in academic

performance of Senior High School students at Nagbalayong National High School towards the

social media and its effect in their academic performance.

CHAPTER II
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Review Related Literature

There is no doubt that Social media has gained wider acceptability and usability and is also

becoming probably the most important communication tools among students especially at the

higher level of educational pursuit. As much as social media is viewed as having bridged the gap

in communication that existed. Within the social media Facebook, Twitter and others are now

gaining more and more patronage. These websites and social forums are way of communicating

directly with other people socially. Social media has the potentials of influencing decision-making

in a very short time regardless of the distance. On the bases of its influence, benefits and demerits

this study is carried out in order to highlight the potentials of social media in the academic setting

by collaborative learning and improve the students' academic performance. The results show that

collaborative learning positively and significantly with interactive with peers, interactive with

teachers and engagement which impact the students’ academic performance. (Al-Rahmi, 2013)

The internet is an interconnected computer networks that use the standard internet protocol

suite to serve billions of users worldwide. It consists of millions of private, public, academic,

business and government networks that range from local to global scope that are linked by a broad

array of electronic, wireless and optical networking technologies. The advancement of media

technology has had a great influence on the way people now communicate on a daily basis. The

use of the social media among the youth of today is growing by the day and gaining more and

more popularity among students. It is a way to make connections, not only on campus but with

friends outside of school. Social networking is a way that helps people feel they belong to a

community. Its increased popularity has raised concern over how the time spent and student
activities on these sites could impact their performance in school. (Celestine, 2018)

Social media usage by students is so rampant recently because of easy access to devices

such as smart phones, I-phones, black berry, tablets, i-pad and laptops which are connected to the

internet. Addiction to the usage of social media has extremely increased in recent times. The perils

of its effects on the academic performance of the over-involved students are disturbing. Academic

performance which is depicted by the grades of students is a great concern student that spends

excessive time on social networks become dependent on it and it is believed that their academic

performance diminishes proportionately. It is perceived that school grades will suffer when

spending too much time on social sites such as Facebook, twitter and as valuable study time is lost.

These therefore necessitate the study of the impact of social network usage on academic

performance of secondary school students in English Language. (Olaitan, 2017)

Conceptual Framework

 Demographic profile of the

respondents in term of:
a. Sex;
b. Strand and
Paradigm of the Study
Figure 1

The figure 1 presents the paradigm of the study. The first frame represents the input, the

second frame shows the process, and the third frame displays the output of the study.

The first frame presents the input of the study which includes the demographic profile of

the respondents in terms of sex, strand, and grade level, level of the social media usage in terms of

frequency and mode of social media use, and significant relationship between frequency of social

media use and academic performances of Senior High School student.

On the other hand, the second frame shows the process of the study such as collecting the

profile of the respondents and analyzing the gathered data.

Furthermore, the third frame presents the output of the study which contains the improved

students’ academic performance.

The solid line connects the frame which refers to the relationship between the input and

the process, and the process and the output.

And lastly, the diagram shows the flow of the research about the impact of social media in

the academic performance of Senior High School students.

Research Hypothesis

Ho: There is no significant relationship between the social media use of the student and

their academic performance.

Ha: There is significant relationship between the social media use of the student and their

academic performance.

Definition of Terms

CHAPTER III

METHODS OF RESEARCH

This chapter is about the research design and the instrument in gathering data.

Methods and Technique of the Study

This research will employ Quantitative Approach since the research questions we seek will

be answered by a numerical data.

Specifically, the study is correlational, it aims to determine the relationship between the

impacts of social media usage of students to their academic performance.

Correlational research is a type of non-experimental research method, in which a

researchers measures two variables.

The Sample

The target respondents of the study are the Senior High School students SY 2019-2020 of

Nagbalayong National High School. This students belong to three different strands of the Senior

High School program, namely: General Academic Strand (GAS); Humanities and Social Sciences

(HUMSS); Technical Vocational Livelihood (TVL).

With a population size of 122, the researchers will consider a sample of 40 respondent’s

convience for respondents determined the SHS student’s attendance. These samples shall be

randomly selected through stratified random sampling with the SHS tracks being used to defined

groups to randomly determine the samples.
