DRY LEAN CONCRETE

DLC is used for construction of sub base layer under concrete pavement in India.It ia a zero slump
concrete.

maximum aggregate cement ratio used as 15:1 & maximum cement content is 150 kg/cum . The avg
compressive strength of consecutive 5 cubes shall not less than 10 MPa at 7 days.

IRC 49:1998

1. width - The DLC sub base shall extend beyond the pavement edges by 50 cm to provide adequate
support.

2. Thickness -A thickness of 100mm or 150 mm used. for major concstruction 150 mm thickness used.

3. Materials :

(a) cement : OPC ,PSC & PPC used. if the sub base found consist of sulphates .0.5 % then sulphate
resisting cement used.

(b) coarse aggregate : maximum size of coarse aggregate used as 25mm (12.5 mm or 25mm or both).

water absorption of coarse aggregate should not be more than 2%

(c) fine aggregate :dust of crushed stoneor sand or combination of both used.

water : PH value of water up to 9 may be permitted.

Propertioníng of materials for the mix: Maximum aggregate cement ratio 15:1

cement content : shall not be < 150 kg/cum

concrete strength : The average compressive strength of each consecutive group of 5 cubes shall not be
less than 10 MPa at 7 days

minimum compressive strength of individual cube shall not be < 7.5 MPa.

Construction

The sub base shall be overlaid with cement concrete pavement only after 7 days after sub base
construction

Batching and mixing of materials : The capacity of batching and mixing plant = 25 % higher than the
proposed capacity of laying arrengement

Placing of concrete

compaction

The spreading , compacting and finishing shall not > 90 mins.if the temperature of conrete (25 - 30
degree)
and 120 mins (if , 25 degree celcius)

Temp > 35 degree - work stopped

Temp > 40 -Desired to stop concreting

Roller : Double drum smooth wheeled vibratory roller of 80 - 100 kN weight are suitable for rolling dry
lean concrete.

Curing : curing shall be done by covering gunny bags in minimum 3 layers for 7 days

The minimum dry density obtained shall be 97% of the dry density achieved during trial length
construction and the density achieved at the edges (i.e. upto 0.5m from the edge) shall be not less than
95% of the MDD.

Traffic : No heavy vehicles like trucks and buses shall be permitted on lean concrete sub base after
immediate construction , however be allowed after 7 days.
