CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Rationale

Fraternities and sororities are widely known in college, but not only

college but also in K to 12. It is organizations that involve initiation to the

members. Fraternities were founded on dedication to principles such as

community service, academic achievement, and leadership qualities. Most

fraternities and sororities today maintain traditions, which are generally

symbolic in nature and kept as closely guarded secrets. Some chapters

are closed, and many had trouble filling their available spaces.

Fraternities grew rapidly because many of the students are curious

about this kind of organization. Some fraternities and sororities are

honored by the society because of their great help to them. They maintain

peace in societies and help them clean the surroundings, while other

fraternities and sororities are experiencing discrimination because of their

bad attitudes and habits towards other people.

In the University of Cebu - Main Campus, Senior High School

Department, joining Fraternity is not allowed because the K to 12 Basic

Education won’t accredit the fraternity. However, the administration gave a

permission that states; student can only be allowed, given permission that

the membership happened outside. It implies that that there are already

existing members since the advent of Senior High.

2

The research aimed to express the Lived Experience of Fratmen in

the University of Cebu - Main Campus, Senior High School Department. It

will further describe both reasons and effects when joining the

organization.

Theoretical Background

This study is anchored on the Reasoned Action Theory by Fishbein

& Azjen(1975), Student Development Theory by Erik H. Erikson(2009),

and Rational Choice Theory by Cesare Becacaria and Cornish and

Clarke, Piquero and Tibbetts, Clarke and Felson, Ariely(1986).

The Fraternities and Sororities are visible in all colleges since the

1700's. They were first established to uplift activities outside of the

classroom. Many exciting volunteer wants to grab opportunities and

community outlets available in joining these organizations.

The study is anchored on Reasoned Action Theory. The theory of

reasoned action aims to determine the behavior and it intentions. In

application on this theory to the researchers’ study, there are people who

really want to join a fraternity but it depends in their behavior and their

intentions, a fraternity and sorority the informants must know their

intentions why they want to join a fraternity or sororities. In these cases,

the reasoned action theory relates the problem. This study will focus on

the issue of the Reasoned Action the lived experience of fratmen.

3

Student Development Theory defined is a structure of psychological

findings that are applicable to students. Student Development Theory is

important in higher education because it let student affairs practitioners to

more fully understand the changes many student are going through. In

application on this theory to the researcher’s study, some students found

out that personality can allow one to effectively communicate with

students.

Rational Choice Theory is a framework of understanding and often

formally modelling social and economic behavior. The theory also focuses

on the determinants of the individual choices. Rational Choice Theory

assumes that an individual has inclination among the available choice

other they consider better. In application to this theory to researcher’s

study, student find it hard when choosing the right or wrong decision,

because when it comes to reality student might encounter stage fright.

respondents sample from a larger population. The result of the study is

applicable only to the respondents of his research and should not be used

as a quantification of the Lived Experience of Fratmen in University of

Cebu Main Campus Senior High School Department.

Definition of Terms
7

For the purpose of clarification, the followings terms are defined

operationally:

Fraternity it is basically term used to define a body of people

associated for a common purpose or interest.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter will explain the method by this research. This chapter

will mention every component involved in conducting this research, in this

chapter will supply a detail explanation of the Design, Locale, Respondent,

Instrument and Procedure.

Research Design

Study will used a Phenomenology design. Phenomenology is a

close in to qualitative research that focal point on the commonality of lived

experienced within a specific group. The basic goal of the study is to come

at an explanation of the lived experienced of fratmen (Creswell, 2013).

Research Locale

This study was conducted at University of Cebu Main Campus

Senior High School Department, J. Alcantara St, Cebu City, Cebu. The

University of Cebu has been recognized by the Philippine Association of

Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACU-COA). An

educational institution of what was then called the Cebu College of

Commerce, then later renamed Cebu Central Colleges (CCC). Starting

with a handful of enrollees, the college was established on April 1, 1964. It

9

grew over time and became the University of Cebu. This place was

selected for knowing the efficiency of the said study among fratmen and

for them to feel comfortable, this study was implemented on S.Y. 2019-

2020.

Research Participants

The Informants of this study will be 5-10 selected fratmen in

University of Cebu Main Campus Senior High School Department who are

already member of fraternity. The informants must be a Senior High

School student. The researchers selecting group from the school to

participate in the research; it is the procedure of selecting a number of

individuals for a research in such a way that the individuals choose

represent the large group from which they were choose (Ogula, 2005).

Research Instrument

This study focuses use of the researcher-made questionnaire which

was used as an interview guide that is based on topic on The Lived

Experience of Fratmen in University of Cebu Main Campus Senior High

School Department which serve as the main instrument of this study. The
10

informants will be selected with the use of the purposive sampling. The

questions are related to fraternity and sororities, examples are the

following: What is the reason of the Respondents Joining the Fraternity?

What are the consequences in joining fraternity?

Data Gathering Procedure

The first step before conducting the interview is to make a request

letter. Upon approval, the researcher retrieves the request letter. The

principal, as well as the class advisers and other faculty members were

selected in the administrations.

In administering the Interview guide, the researcher was use the

time allotted for vacant to avoid distractions of the class discussions. The

informants were given time to answer the interview guide.

Chapter V

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATION

This is qualitative study that makes use of phenomenological

research design designed to investigate the study on frat men in

University of Cebu Main Campus Senior High School Department.

This research study was conducted at University of Cebu Main

Campus Senior High School Department. The participants of the study are

5 students who engage themselves in joining the fraternity. The study

makes use of interview questions these will be the fundamental basis of

the study “Frat men”. The researcher will be give and informed consent to

the principal. The participants will be interviewed and given form. After the

data gathering, the data will be read and reviewed by the teachers and

significant statement of each transcript will be extracted. The significant

statements will be formulated into categories and themes.

Summary of Findings

After conducting our research and the respondents answers all the

questions, we found out that this generation and mostly teenagers are

already member of fraternity. They all said that they are just influenced by

their friends, family connections and they are encourage to joined because

fraternity’s good deeds. These students are aged 18-21 and 4 males and

1 female. Some them said, that it makes them feel comfortable and glad

because of brotherhood. Society’s well-being and brotherhood is the main

reason why they are joining the fraternity.

Conclusion

Just because of their influence their friends and family connections

they joined the fraternity. And one of the reason why they joined fraternity

is they want to feel the brotherhood that they didn’t feel to others. Some of

the members have problems on relationships on family. To cope up this

kind of situation the informants must love their family first so that that they

will have support from their families.

Recommendation

The following are suggested by the Researchers:

 So we suggest that they should know the consequences first before

joining the fraternity.

 We suggest that they must be matured enough in joining the

fraternity.

 They should engage activities were in they can build friendship

 They should give time to their families in order to have strong family
