ACTION PLAN FOR ADDRESSING PROCRASTINATION
Pick an activity where you have been procrastinating (the activity should be one you
could start to work on this coming week:
Planning my husband’s birthday party
Mindfully note some reasons why you are procrastinating:
• The dif iculty of getting started unless the time pressure is there.
• The overwhelming nature of the issue.
• The dif iculty of inding a starting point.
• The unattractive nature of tasks that require sustained effort.
• The thought that it makes sense to wait for a period when there is enough time (usually never
comes).
List some negative consequences of your procrastination
I will have to “scramble” to get it done
I might not get it done, and that would lead to hurt feelings for my husband
I will feel very guilty if I fail to support him
Identify an overall goal:
I must complete a plan of what / how / who is involved in carrying out the party.
Identify the irst step:
Coordinate my ideas of what will happen that day.
Schedule a time to complete the irst step:
By Thursday evening.
Make that you have everything in place to complete irst step:
Make a list of my ideas, remembering everything that has already been put in motion as well as
the things I’ve discussed with others.
Evaluate the results:
I had a lot of interruptions to completing this task because of some family issues around who is
and should be responsible for some aspects of the party. Part of the reason I was procrastinating
was that I anticipated this and was avoiding the struggles I knew I would face. However, the goal
of completing the irst step of planning by Thursday night forced me to push through these
interactions and reach a conclusion with the others involved. I ended up doing my preparations on
Saturday morning and getting it out of the way before a more pleasant activity I had booked for
Saturday night. This made me feel organized and relieved that it was behind me and I enjoyed
myself a little bit more because of it. By Thursday night, I had completed the planning of the event
and had a detailed list of the jobs to be done. I can now move on to delegating those jobs to some
people, and completing my own without the looming anxiety of muddling through the family
issues.
