WRITING OBJECTIVES

A survey of objectives formulated by teachers of English for their


writing programs revealed that the development of values as well as skills is
emphasized.
1. To help pupils or learners appreciate and value good writing
2. To give training in writing activities as means of helping the pupil become
an agreeable member of social group, of instilling pride in become a
Filipino, and of making him appreciate hi country and his cultural
heritage.
3. To help children demonstrate in their writing a serious concern written
work.
4. To train pupil to observe courtesy and correct forms in their written
work.
5. To create trough his writing activities and assignments a situation in
which the pupil can express himself correctly and courteously and in
which he can find genuine writing pleasure.
6. To provide situations for the pupil to express his thoughts and feelings in
acceptable English.
7. To demonstrate that sentence express e concepts, information, mood and
attitude.
8. To show pupil how to produce clear and communicative prose.
9. To guide pupils to select and organize target-language items with a view
to producing texts.
10. To help pupils select and organize words to fulfill a particular
rhetorical aim.
11. To train the pupils in the selection of items and structure to form
successful grammatical sequences.
12. To train the pupils to link sentences together to form communication
texts in contrast with isolated sentences.
13. To train pupils to use certain techniques in composing a paragraph.
14. To train pupils to write a good and unified paragraph.
15. To help pupils to write details in their proper order so that the central
idea is carried smoothly from sentence to sentence.
16. To help pupils to use devices that connect sentences together in dis-
course.
17. To help pupils to use certain techniques in composing a paragraph.
18. To provide extra guidance work for assessment of written work.
Consolidatory writing

 Is a lesson stage where new material is reviewed, and hopefully learning is reinforced, it
normally occurs the end of the lesson. Which takes places at a later time and serves to
remind learners.

Free writing
 Free composition
 The process of generating ideas at random and making list.
 Primary purpose is to get students to allow themselves to feel free.

Examples of fully controlled writing exercises:

 Taking down sentences and paragraphs from dictation.


 Rewriting sentences and selecting the correct word.
 Substituting correct grammatical forms and structure.
 Substituting specific and vivid forms for general words and items.
 Rewriting sentences and passages and supplying the correct forms and appropriate expressions.
 Completing a paragraph by supplying the missing details.
 Writing a question for a given statement.
 Rearranging sentences into a story.
 Paraphrasing sentences.

Example of controlled writing or guided writing activities:

 Writing questions about reading passage or listening comprehension passage.


 Writing about personal experiences and observation based on a given situation.
 Writing an imaginary conversion based on a given situations.
 Retelling the story
 Finishing a story

 Personal notes and letters

 Simple narration
