HAMPTON PULLS A DOOZY

HAMPTON, Va -- The Hampton University Unveiling, - the time when the Homecoming performer is
revealed; Started off a Tuesday night of high energy, and excitement with flashing lights, loud music, and
free ticket giveaways. But just as anticipation peaked, students were shocked to realize there would be no
unveiling.

The song Selfish by Philadelphia artist, Pnb Rock began to play, but there was no announcement made
leaving students to wonder if Pnb Rock was really going to perform. Students took to twitter Tuesday
evening to express their frustrations and how Hampton “scammed them,” one said. Another user wrote,
“Hampton is such a joke.”

The attacks were swift. One user tweeted, “The homecoming committee planned this show and THEY
don’t even know who is coming.”

The Homecoming Committee declined to officially comment on how the event was handled. “We are
unable to say why there was no official announcement about who the artists will be,” one committee
member said, declining to allow a name to be used.

Students' hopes were dashed.

“Word around campus was that Cardi B would be performing yet again,” said sophomore Ajanay Hines.

Cardi B performed at the 2018 Spring Fest, and recently made history as the first female rap artist to
reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 since 1998.

The unveiling began at 6 pm, and as the auditorium filled up, students sat with anticipation. Rumors were
in the air, and anxiety level high, the crowd sat anxiously awaiting for the show to start. The event lasted
about three hours, and by the third hour, the crowd seemed impatient. Highlights included performances
by The University Gospel choir, Majestics d ance group and The Force Marching Band, all typical of past
unveilings, but this year the main reason for the event was a failure.

Typically, the unveiling is held in the beginning of the fall semester to reveal who the homecoming
performer will be. It is a tradition at the university and it usually gives students a preview of what they
can expect for that year's annual homecoming week. The unveiling features performances by the different
organizations at the school, The Divine Nine fraternities and sororities, and a display of the previous
year’s homecoming.

“This unveiling was a joke, they haven’t even told us who is coming and that’s the only reason people
showed up,” said sophomore Stephanie Smith.
