4 / FactoryLink 6.6.0 / Windows NT and Windows 95 Installation Guide

Chapter 1

Installation
1

Installation
This chapter describes how to install FactoryLink on Windows NT and Windows
95 platforms. Perform an initial installation if you have never installed
FactoryLink software on the destination before using one of two methods:
• Express Installation—Installs all licensed FactoryLink software modules.
• Custom Installation—Installs individual FactoryLink modules. As some options
depend upon others, an incomplete or incorrect group of choices could result in
an incompatible mix.

Refer to “Upgrading FactoryLink Version” on page 58 if you have previously

installed FactoryLink.

Have the following information included in Exhibit A in the authorization

package available:
• Authorization desk phone and fax numbers
• List of the FactoryLink options purchased
• FactoryLink Serial Number
• FactoryLink Configuration Sequence

Each FactoryLink system is assigned a unique serial number and configuration

sequence. The configuration sequence specifies which tasks have been purchased
for a particular serial number. The system uses both numbers to create a
registration code during installation.

I NITIAL I NSTALLATION
Perform the following steps to install FactoryLink:

1 Close all applications before installing.

Note: If installing on the Windows NT platform, ensure you

have administrator privileges for your login account.

2 Insert the FactoryLink installation media into the appropriate drive.

Supplemental
Installation

Supplemental Installation lets you add options to FactoryLink after the initial
installation. Some supplemental installations require you to answer a series of
questions about the options to be installed.

Supplemental Installation is necessary to install the following:

• Corrective services diskettes
• New options from the FactoryLink system distribution media
• Pre-release options
• Programmer’s Access Kit (PAK) 2
• Protocol Modules
• Additional language support

Supplemental
Installation
Caution: Be aware tasks installed using this procedure
replace existing tasks on the system.

Perform the following procedure for a selective supplemental installation for

Windows NT or Windows 95. Remember tasks you install replace the
corresponding tasks existing on the system.

Note: To prevent overwriting your existing FactoryLink

installation, it is important you run the installation program
from your hard disk using the FactoryLink Install icon in the
FactoryLink Program Group for supplemental installations. If
you run the Install program from the CD, it produces a message
indicating the base software must be installed first. If you
proceed with a new base installation from the CD, you overwrite
your existing FactoryLink installation.

• ADDITIONAL PROCEDURES
• Upgrading FactoryLink Version

U PGRADING F ACTORY L INK VERSION
Perform the following steps to install a newer version of FactoryLink on a
computer that has existing FactoryLink software.

Note: Installing FactoryLink overwrites the ctlist and titles files.

These files are located in the FLINK\ctgen and FLINK\ac
directories, respectively. If you have a custom task, save a copy
of these files before installing FactoryLink. After installing
FactoryLink, you can edit your custom lines in the just-saved
ctlist and titles files into the new FLINK\ctgen\ctlist and
FLINK\ac\titles files. Use this method to ensure no corrections or
new FactoryLink tasks are lost. Once this is done, you can run
FLCONV as appropriate without loss of the customer task
Configuration Manager data.

1. Perform a platform-specific save using the FLSAVE utility to back up the

existing FactoryLink application. Refer to Chapter 7, “FactoryLink Utilities”,
in FactoryLink Fundamentals for details on using FLSAVE.
Caution: It is highly recommended that you install your
upgrade to a different directory than your existing
FactoryLink installation to avoid mismatched
versions of system files.

2. Install FactoryLink software. The path to the previously installed version of

FactoryLink appears in the Install to field. We recommend installing to a new
directory.

3. Restore the application you saved previously in this procedure using the
FLREST utility. Refer to Chapter 7, “FactoryLink Utilities”, in FactoryLink
Fundamentals for details on using FLREST.

4. Convert the application to the new FactoryLink version using the FLCONV
