RECENT HERBAL MEDICINES

Centella asiatica:

Centella asiatica locally known as pegagan is a medicinal plant which is

widely used in Ayurveda and the traditional and other traditional
preparations , in order to improve memory and learning . it has also been
reported to provide protection to brain against oxidative damage and in
turn promote nerve growth and neuronal dendritic arborisation.

The evidence that C.asiatica exhibit anti-inflammatory effect in

lipopolysaccharide –treated neuronal cells of rats led to the future
investigation of the neuroprotective effect of the centella asiatica
methanolic extract by evaluating the expression of a – synuclein M
aggregation in rotenone induced Zebrafish . Histopathological studies
were also carried out to observe the expression of a –synuclein . The
methanolic extract was found to reverse the effects caused by rotenone
and was found in increase the dopamine in detail the expression of a-
synuclein in treated groups.

Curcuma longa :

Curcumin is the yellow coloured ,active, natural, polyphenolic compound

extracted from rhizomes of to curcuma longa(turmeric) and has been
found to be potent candidate in case of antioxidant , anticancer , anti-
inflammatory effects and neuroprotective in both animal models as well
as cell culture.

Decalepis hamiltonii :

Edible roots of decalepis hamiltonii has been reported to process anti

oxidant properties and several novel antioxidants molecules have been
identified and isolated from its aqueous tract . Earlier studies have also
demonstrated that they process neuroprotective activity in albino rat and
drosophila .

The decalepis hamiltonii was studied from its neuroprotective potential in

a-synucleintransferase drosophila expressing mutant forms of human a-
synnuclein gene namely A30P and A53T .The results of study revealed and
antioxidant effect of the Dh aqueous extract on A30P and A53T a-
synnuclein PD the neuroprotective effect by suppression of oxidative
stress.

CONCLUSION

The pathophysiology and progression of neurological disorders are

complex and involve a no. of factors . The current therapeutic approaches
are not entirely successful in curbing the menace . The recent
investigation into plant and plant based therapeutic approaches has
provided evidence for their potential benefits. Various phytoconstituents
are responsible for these effects they work for in various pathways in
various conditions .

The neurological condition like Parkinson disease is on the risk due to

increase in old population and needed to be curbed to prevent
widespread loss of quality of life as well economical loss.

The plant and plant products discussed in the review articles are in the
initial stages of in-vivo and in-vitro investigations and require an array of
investigational proofs to be brought into clinical use . However these
reports provide a glimmer hope for the millions of patient afflicted with
these morbities and provide a promising signof development of
economical as well as effective therapeutic strategies rooted on plants
and other traditional known medicines.

INTRODUCTION

Parkinson disease (PD) is chronic and progressive movement disorder,

mean that symptoms continue and worsen overtime . Nearly one million
people in the U.S. are living with in PD . The cause is unknown , and all
through there is presently no cure , there are treatment options such as
medication and surgery to manage ibs symptoms.

Parkinson involves the malfunction and death of vital nerve cell in the
brain called neuron . Parkinson primarily affects neurons in the area of
brain called the substantia nigra . Someof these dying neurons produce
dopamine , a chemical that sends message to the part of the brain that
controls movement and coordination . As PD progresses , the amount of
dopamine produced in the brain decreases . Living a person unable to
control movement normally .
The specific group of symptoms that an individual experiences varies from
person to person . Primary motor signs of PD include the following :

- Tremor of the hands , arm , leg , jaw and face

- Bradykinesia or slowness of movement
- Rigidity or stiffness of the trunk
- Postural instability or impaired balance
