CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Rationale

Fraternities and sororities are widely known in college, but not only college

but also in K to 12. It is organizations that involve initiation to the members.

Fraternities were founded on dedication to principles such as community service,

academic achievement, and leadership qualities. Most fraternities and sororities

today maintain traditions, which are generally symbolic in nature and kept as

closely guarded secrets. Some chapters are closed, and many had trouble filling

their available spaces. Fraternities grew rapidly because many of the students

are curious about this kind of organization. Some fraternities and sororities are

honored by the society because of their great help to them. They maintain peace

in societies and help them clean the surroundings, while other fraternities and

sororities are experiencing discrimination because of their bad attitudes and

habits towards other people.

In University of Cebu Main Campus Senior High School Department,

Joining Fraternity is not allowed because of the K to 12 Basic Education won’t

accredit the fraternity. However, the administration gave a permission that states;

student, can only be allowed, given permission that the membership happened

outside. It implies that that there are already students whose member in Tau

Gamma, Alpha Kappa Rho, Betans and etc.

There are some reports that some people are not given chance to choice

when deciding to join a fraternity however, interviews with fraternity members

have not shown that anyone was threat to join the fraternity, nor they know of

fraternities that force membership.

The research aim to address the Lived Experience of Fratmen in the

University of Cebu Main Campus Senior High School Department. Also, it shows

if the fraternity somehow affects the grades of fratmen. As the country

effectuates the K

to 12 curricula the researchers agreed t o have a senior high school student at

the University of Cebu Main Campus Senior high School Department.

Theoretical Background

The Fraternities and Sororities are visible in all colleges since the 1700's.

They were first established to uplift activities outside of the classroom. Many

exciting volunteer wants to grab opportunities and community outlets available in

joining these organizations.

The study is anchored on Reasoned Action Theory. The theory of

reasoned action aims to determine the behavior and it intentions. In application

on this theory to the researchers’ study, there are people who really wants to join

a fraternity but it depends in their behavior and their intentions, a fraternity and

sorority the informants must know their intentions why they want to join a

fraternity or sororities. In these case, the reasoned action theory relates the
problem. This study will focus on the issue of the Reasoned Action the lived

experience of fratmen.

Statement of the Problem

The overall purpose of conducting this study is to know the Lived

Experience of Fratmen in the Univerisity of Cebu Main Campus Senior High

School Department during the 2nd Sem. Of S.Y> 2019-2020.

This study seeks to answer the following:

1.) What is the reason of the Respondents Joining the Fraternity?

2.) What are the effects of the Fraternities & Sororities?

3.) What are the Coping Strategies/Recommendation for upcoming

participant that will join the organization?

Significance of the Study

The study focused on the lived experience of fratmen in University of

Cebu Main Campus Senior High School Department. Furthermore, the results of

reference stuff and a escort for future researchers who desire to handling the

same experimental research or any study related to lived experiences of fratmen.

Scope and Delimitations

This study focused on the Lived Experience of Fratmen in University of

Cebu Main Campus Senior High School Department during the Second

Semester of S.Y. 2019-2020. The respondents of the study were composed of 5-

10 members, the researchers chooses a group of respondents sample from a

larger population. The result of the study is applicable only to the respondents of

his research and should not be used as a quantification of the Lived Experience

of Fratmen in University of Cebu Main Campus Senior High School Department.

Definition of Terms

For the purpose of clarification, the followings terms are defined

operationally:
Conducting the manner in which person behaves, especially on a

particular occasion or in a particular context.

Fraternity it is basically term used to define a body of people associated

for a common purpose or interest.

Informants a person who replies to something, especially one supplying

information for a survey or questionnaire or responding to an advertisement.

Lived Experience knowledge about the world gained through direct, first-

hand involvement in veryday.

Teacher an experienced individual who serves as a role model to the

students, facilitate the activities, provide counseling and support the respondents

to build mutual trust to one another (Araño and Panganiban, 2006)

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF THE RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the literature and studies that are related to the

present’s study. This serve as a guide of the proposed study to determine the

differences and similarities of the findings between this study and other related

studies, to gain insight into the aspects of the problems that are controversial.

Related Literature

A fraternity is well-ordered community of men associated with each other

in an environment of togetherness and brotherhood; committed to the mental,

physical, and social development of its constitute. Some historically male-only

organizations now include women. Service association, societies, and private

societies are among the fraternal organizations here listed. College fraternities

become visible in the List of social fraternities. According to DeSimone (2007).

This research will examine the connection that social fraternity membership has

with jag drinking occurrence and frequency among 18 years old to 24 years old

full-time 4-year college students who joined in the 1995 National College Health

Risk Behavior Survey. To net out not obeserved heterogeneity, some measures

of situational and total alcoholic drink use are entered into the regressions as

explanatory variables. Fraternity membership coefficients are substantially

reduced in size, but remain large and highly significant, suggesting a causal

effect on binge drinking. Otherwise, the estimates identify idiosyncratic selection

into fraternities and binge drinking across students with similar overall drinking
profiles. Particularly notable is that behavior by underage students appears to

drive the relationship.

This research was planned to look at contrast between Greek and non-

Greek college students' awareness of a hazing event that had taken place in a

fraternity setting. The Subjects were 231 students (112 Greeks, 119

independents) at a average size state university in the eastern United States with

a average Greek existence. Subjects read one of four conditions of a hazing

scenario involving an overdose of alcohol consumed voluntarily or involuntarily

administered by a fraternity president or fraternity brother. Dependent measures

included attributions of responsibility as well as causal attributions.

Authoritarianism was explored as well. Responsibility attributions and causal

attributions varied with the voluntary versus involuntary nature of the overdose

and with membership in Greek organizations. Finally, Greek students were found

to score higher on authoritarianism than were non-Greek students.

Fraternities and Sororities are organization that brings together men and

women, respectively for social, honor, service or recognition purposes, social

fraternities and sororities, usually known by their Greek Letters, are commonly

found on American college campuses and may be national with branches at

many colleges, or no one campus. Phi BETA KAPPA [1779] is the first honor

society, or fraternity.

Most social fraternities began in semi secrecy, possibly in imitation of

FREEMASONRY, and bore the initials of Greek letters. Kappa Alpha at union

college was the first fraternity [1825], adelphean at Wesleyan College, was the
first Sorority [1851]. Fraternities grew rapidly after 1840. Divisiveness and

controversy existed from the beginning and animosity resulted from fraternities

and sororities choosing only the more socially favored as members and then

encouraging a conformist style of thought and behavior. In time the fraternities

influence on students rivaled the faculty’s sensing this, many colleges in the

1890’s tried unsuccessfully to abolish them, by 1898 a large minority of male

American college students were fraternity members.

Review of Related Study

According to Zarco and Shoemaker (1995). These fraternity members

came from typically come from comfortable family backgrounds with a good

educational foundation. To be admitted to this university, they must have scored

higher than all other applicants on a standardized national entrance exam. As

stated by DepEd (2007). In past years, the Department of Education has provide

measure of preventing the practices of hazing and ban fraternities in primary and

secondary schools. Department Codification No. 6 s. of 1954 ban the exercise of

hazing in schools and colleges force penalty for violations. Department

Codification No. 20 s. 1991, for now, ban the working of fraternities and sororities

in public and private primary and secondary schools. Furthermore, Republic Act

No. 8049 (The Anti-Hazing Act) provides for strict penalties for the conduct of

hazing and other initiation rites associated with fraternities, sororities and similar

organizations.

In view of recent incidences of fraternity-related violence involving high

school students and in view of the history of violence associated with these
organizations, some of which have resulted to juvenile deaths, the Department of

Education reiterates the abovementioned policies regarding fraternities and

sororities and the use of hazing and other acts of violence in elementary and

secondary schools. School authorities are requested to take a more active role in

the prevention of juvenile violence in their respective areas. They are further

instructed to coordinate with local units of the Department of Interior and Local

Government, the Department of Social Work and Development, and the

Philippine National Police in order to monitor and control the proliferation of

fraternities, sororities and similar organizations in elementary and secondary

schools in their respective areas. Moreover, school authorities are encouraged to

promote co-curricular and extra-curricular organizations and activities that can

serve as more wholesome and productive alternatives to fraternities, sororities

and like organizations. Wide dissemination of and strict compliance with this

Order is enjoined.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter will explain the method by this research. This chapter will

mention every component evolved in conducting this research from Design,

Locale, Respondent, Instrument and Procedure. Finally, in this chapter supply a

detail explanation of the Design, Locale, Respondent, Instrument and Procedure.

Research Design

Study will employ a Phenomenology design. Phenomenology is an close

in to qualitative research that focal point on the commonality of lived experience

within a specific group. The basic goal of the approach is to come at a

explanation of the lived experience of fratmen (Creswell, 2013).

Research Locale

This study was conducted at University of Cebu Main Campus Senior

High School Department, this place was selected for knowing the efficiency of

the said study among fratmen and for them to feel comfortable, this study was

implemented on S.Y. 2019-2020.

Research Respondent

The Informants of this study will be 5-10 selected fratmen in University of

Cebu Main Campus Senior High School Department who are already member of

fraternity. The informants will be selected with the use of the purposive sampling.

This study focuses use of the researcher made interview questionnaires which
serve as the main instrument of this study. The informants must be a Senior High

School student. The researchers selecting group from the school to participate in

the research; it is the procedure of selecting a number of individuals for a

research in such a way that the individuals choose represent the large group

from which they were choose (Ogula, 2005).

Research Instrument

The researcher-made questionnaire used interview guide that is based on

topic on The Lived Experience of Fratmen in University of Cebu Main Campus

Senior High School Department. The question are related to fraternity and

sororities, examples are the following: What is the reason of the Respondents

Joining the Fraternity? What is the exact population of teenagers joins the

fraternity? What are the activities that their organizations do? What are the

perspectives of the students if they join this organization?

Procedure

The first step before going to interview guide is to make a request letter.

Upon approval, the researcher retrieves the request letter. The principal, as well

as the class advisers and other faculty members were selected in the

administrations.

In administering the Interview guide, the researcher was use the time

allotted for vacant to avoid distractions of the class discussions. The informants

were given time to answer the interview guide.

The themes are (2) Society’s well-being, (2) Folks Supremacy, (2) Good-

fellowship, (1) Risky Living. Each theme is supported by statements and is

evident by the 5 informants of the study.

Presentation of Themes

I. Society’s well-being

Society’s well-being refers to the people’s action in terms of helping

people those who are in need. This is and end state in which fundamental human

needs and people are able to exist tranquilly society’s with chance for

advancement.(Social well-being, 2007).

A. To serve the poor

One of the reasons in joining fraternity is to serve the poor. A society

service which is supply by organization to people living within this jurisdiction.

(Denhardt J.V. & Denhardt R., 2015). As pne of the informants said:

“ Para sa services, niya para maka serbisyo kos mga kabos o mga pobre.”

(Informant 1, Line 12)

B. Inspired to serve

One of the Reasons why they are joining fraternity it’s because they

inspired to serve. Influence to serve to community without asking for

return. (Elwell W.A, 2001).As one of the informants said:

“Kay na enganyo ko daghan kayg silag na tabangan ba nga mga

Tao.” (Informant 3, Line 15)

C. Community Service

Another reasons in joining fraternity is community services. Is a non-paying job

performed by a group of people for the benefit of their society or its institutions.

B. Brotherhood

Another reason in joining fraternity is brotherhood, because the informant

want to feel the “PAKIKISAMA”. Brotherhood is an association for any purpose,

such as society of a fraternity.(Knight S, 1983). As one of the participant said:

T.E, 2007). As one of the participant said:

“ Because my uncle, he is president sa among chapter.” (Informant 2, Line 14)

B. Peer Influence

Another reason in joing fraternity is peer influence, in this case this was

influence by his/her friend or is the direct influence on people by peers. (Cory

A.J., 2011). As one of the participant said:

“ Kay tanan mga mego nako kay ni join nalang sad.” (Informant 2, Line
Chapter V

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATION

This is qualitative study that makes use of phenomenological research

design designed to investigate the study on frat men in University of Cebu Main

Campus Senior High School Department.

This research study was conducted at University of Cebu Main Campus

Senior High School Department. The participants of the study are 5 students who

engage themselves in joining the fraternity. The study makes use of interview

questions these will be the fundamental basis of the study “Frat men”. The

researcher will be give and informed consent to the principal. The participants will

be interviewed and given form. After the data gathering, the data will be read and

reviewed by the teachers and significant statement of each transcript will be

extracted. The significant statements will be formulated into categories and

themes.

Summary of Findings

After conducting our research and the respondents answers all the

questions, we found out that this generation and mostly teenagers are already

member of fraternity. They all said that they are just influenced by their friends,

family connections and they are encourage to joined because fraternity’s good

deeds. These students are aged 18-21 and 4 males and 1 female. Some them

said, that it makes them feel comfortable and glad because of brotherhood.
Society’s well-being and brotherhood is the main reason why they are joining the

fraternity.

Conclusion

Just because of their influence their friends and family connections they

joined the fraternity. And one of the reason why they joined fraternity is they want

to feel the brotherhood that they didn’t feel to others. Some of the members have

problems on relationships on family. To cope up this kind of situation the

informants must love their family first so that that they will have support from their

families.

Recommendation

The following are suggested by the Researchers:

 So we suggest that they should know the consequences first before

joining the fraternity.

 We suggest that they must be matured enough in joining the fraternity.

 They should engage activities were in they can build friendship

 They should give time to their families in order to have strong family

relationship.
