Look at the equation 2x + 5 = 11 on the board, imagine

that this equation is balance and I will remove 5 on the left
hand side, what will happen to the equation?
How can we restore the equation to make it balance again?

D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills.

(Pagtatalakay ng bagong konsepto at paglalahad ng bagong
Equation is a sentence tin mathematics that contains an
kasanayan #1)
equal “=” sign. The equal sign tells you that the expression
on the left side is equivalent to the expression on the right
side.
A variable or unknown is represented by a letter which
have a different values. For example, x and y are variables.
A constant is a fixed value that does not change. For
example, 1 and 9 are constants
For example, x + 2 = 6
Is this an equation?
Which is the variable in the equation, x + 2 = 6?
Which is the constant in the equation, x + 2 = 6?
What is the operation being used in this equation?

How will you know if an equation is true and correct?

To know if an equation is true, you need a solution. A
solution of an equation is a number that makes the
sentence or equation true.
The process of finding a solution is called solving an
equation.
In solving an equation, we can try the following:
1. Write the equation
2. Group similar terms in one side
3. Perform the indicated operation
4. Simplify the answer
5. Check
Properties of Equality
1. Addition Property of Equality
If a + c = b + c, where a, b, and c are whole
numbers.
For example, 4 + 6 = 10.
The expression on each side is equal, so if we add 3 then,
4 + 6 + 3 = 10 + 3
13 = 13
In the addition property of equality, if two expressions are
equal to each other, and you add the same value to both
sides, the equation will remain equal.
For example, w + 2 = 5.
Solution:
w+2=5

w+2–2=5–2

w=3

Example 2: Solve for a in the equation a - 1 = 9

In this case, subtraction can be written as addition (adding

the opposite), so the addition property of equality can be
used for subtraction as well. So, if you can just add the
same value to each side of the equation, you can also
subtract the same value to each side of an equation.

Solution:

a –1=9

a–1+1=9+1

a + 0 = 10

a = 10

Check:

Substitute 9 for the value of a,

a–1=9

10 – 1 = 9

9=9

Equations can also involve fraction.

Example 3: 1/3 + n = 2/3
Solution:
1/3 + n = 2/3
1/3 – 1/3 + n = 2/3 – 1/3
n= 1/3

2. Multiplication Property of Equality

If a = b, then ac = bc, where a, b, and c are whole numbers.
In multiplication property of equality, you can also
multiply both sides of an equation by the same quantity to
write an equivalent equation.
For example, 4 * 3 = 12
The expression on each side is equal, so if we multiply by 2
then,
4 * 3 * 2 = 12 * 2
24 = 24
For example, 2a = 12
So, we need to divide both sides of the equation by 2 to get
the value of x.
2a = 12
2a / 2 = 12 / 2
A=6
Check:
2 (6) = 12
12 = 12

Example 2: 1 / 2 x = 6
In this case, we need to multiply both sides of the equation
by 2 (which is the reciprocal of ½) to get the value of x.
2 (1 / 2 n) = 6 (2)
n=1
F. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills.
(Pagtatalakay ng bagong konsepto at paglalahad ng bagong Problem Solving:
kasanayan #2)
A number is increased by 5 is equal to 10. What is the
number?

In this problem, we need to translate the phrase “a number

increased by 5” and “is equal to 10” into algebraic
expression.
Solution:
A number increased by 5 is equal to 10
x+5 = 10

x + 5 = 10
x + 5 – 5 = 10 – 5
x=5
Check: Substitute x = 5 in the equation.
x + 5 = 10
5 + 5 = 10
10 = 10
Let’s try this:
Problem: The regular price of a necklace was reduced by
P10.00 for the necklace. Jeline paid P120.00 for the
necklace. What was the regular price? Solve it.
G. Developing Mastery (Leads to Formative Assesment 3

5. 1 / 2p = 8

G. Finding Practical Applications of concepts and skills in

daily living ( Paglalapat ng aralin sa pang araw-araw na Group Activity
