"It's gonna be business as usual to other destinations that are not affected
by the virus. So there are countries that are still free from the virus, and
that is where the focus would be, if this is going to continue for a longer
period of time," Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA) President
Ritchie Tuano said in an interview with CNN Philippines' "Business Roundup."
According to 2019 data, there were 1.6 million Chinese visitors who spent
around $980 million.
Tuano recalled that the Asia Pacific region suffered a 60 percent drop in air
travelduring the 2003 SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) epidemic
but the region recovered in less than a year.
While foreign governments have issued alerts, he said "it's still safe to
travel."
The Philippines recorded its first case of the novel coronavirus on Thursday.
A 38-year-old female Chinese national travelled from Wuhan to the
Philippines via Hong Kong and has been admitted at San Lazaro Hospital in
Manila.
There are now 140 confirmed cases of the virus in 23 countries aside from
China. The World Health Organization has declared as a public health
emergency of international concern because of the spread of the virus to
many countries.
