UNITY IN DIVERSITY
There is a Yiddish proverb which says “Everyone is kneaded out of the same
dough but not baked in the same oven”
Diversity is the art of thinking independently together. We humans are social
animals and isolation never suits us nor we can live alone. If you take a close look at
the intricacy of life you will discover the beauty of diversity in every single patch of it.
If you contemplate on the history of your own life you will see that life is not a set of
isolated one-type events, it’s a set of interconnected diverse events. It is not just
limited to the events of our personal lives, the events of others’ lives also vastly affect
us. To put it simple, every one of us affects every other one. But we are all not
essentially the same. We differ in our backgrounds of ethnicity, religion, race, color,
culture, cast and creed. This diversity is not just a characteristic of life, it’s a condition
necessary for life. God has planned this diversity. As the Holy Quran mentions in
chapter 30:
“And among His Signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the
diversity of your language and colors. Indeed in that are the Signs for those of
knowledge”
The thing about humans is that we are naturally inclined towards conservatism.
Whoever tries to intervene in our way of life becomes our foe. We hardly entertain
someone who is not similar to us. We act in a way of ‘whoever is not like us is a
stranger’. We hardly entertain the possibility of welcoming people who differ from us
in race and religion. This attitude has lead to racism and religion based terrorism.
Differences of religion and culture has remained one of the major causes of wars. The
press is full of news of violence and detestations based on racial differences. The
diversity that was naturally supposed to add beauty to life has made us enemies of
each other.

 We need to understand that diversity is the nature’s way making our lives
comfortable. There is no way in which we can turn the world into a place with people
of one identity. Strictly speaking, it is impossible. So what to do? Prevailing hatred will
only make life uglier. We have to live in one brotherhood. It is not just about accepting
the diversity, it’s about accepting it happily. Whatever we do, we can’t eliminate this
diversity of life. We have to live with it. We need to understand that a beautiful picture
is the one with intermingled diverse colors. Diversity is natural and aesthetic. Even a
child does not like a one-colored black and white picture. Diversity is what adds colors
to life. We should accept this fact and accept each other.
True progress is impossible to achieve unless we realize that what we need is
not walls that separate us but bridges that connect us. We should hug the diversity
and treat each other as brothers and sister. The differences in our identities should
not be exaggerated so much that we forget the basic truth that we are all basically
humans.
We humans are one specie and we belong together. Whether it is on individual
or social level, survival in isolation is not possible. We humans through the ages have
evolved together and so we need each other. We depend on one another. If we are
not ready to tolerate accept and bear the diversity, we will always be at war with each
other. Survival requires unity and the lack of unity leads to extinction. No matter how
different we become and no matter on what grounds, still we remain humans. We
need to overcome this devil of intolerance with a thing called love.
